Can't install nVidia Driver on Fedora Core 5

I am running Fedora Core 5 on an Intel Pentium IV system. The system also has a 64 Megabyte nVidia GForce 3 video card.
I updated to kernel 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 and I downloaded the latest nVidia drivers (version 1.0-8774)

When I run the installation program for the driver I get the following warning.

WARNING: You appear to be using a modular Xorg release, but nvidia-installer was unable to determine the correct X library installation path with the `pkg-config` utility. Please install the Xorg SDK/development package for your distribution.

I'm not sure where I'm supposed to find and install this package. So, I decided to ignore the warning and continued with the installation of the driver. This results in the following error output starting the X Windows server:

X Window System Version 7.0.0
Release Date: 21 December 2005
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0
Build Operating System:Linux 2.6.9-34.ELsmp i686Red Hat, Inc.

Build Date: 30 June 2006
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

Fatal server error:

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"

What needs to be done to address these warning and errors so I can run X Windows again?
