The NVIDIA X Server Settings tool.

This program is used to configure the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver.
For more detail, please see the nvidia-settings(1) man page.

Try to 'guess' and 'use' one of the flyout menus (I hovered over where I expected something to work anyway)
caused X to dump me out to a console that showed a hand-shaped pointer/cursor and system required hard reboot.
This happened 4 times out of 4 that I tried. Done with that.

Any ideas?

can you disable hardware accel in chrome's preferences?

also, there seems to be some mismatch with gpu:
is your card really the GeForce GTX 660? because that's a fairly new card, and your nvidia driver seems outdated?
and, is X using nouveau or nvidia?
