Hi.

I'm running SuSE 10 and recently had a power failure. On restart, I found that access to a home folder '/home/mike' had been lost.

I can log through the GUI as root and any user except for mike. When logged in as root and using konqueror, the folder /home/mike appears to be missing.

However, if I log in as root and do 'ls /home', I get the message "/bin/ls: /home/mike: Permission denied".

The partition is definately mounted rw. Root has the id "uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)". I have tried chown, getfacl, chattr on /home/mike, but get Permission denied messages each time.

I can see the /home/mike directory using mc, but it shows up in red as "?mike" If I try to access it, I get "Permission denied (13) "

The other wierd thing (Possibly the clue!?!) is that the modification time on the directory has been set to 01 Jan 1970. The timestamps on all other files are unaffected, and the system time is still correct.

So, I have a directory I need to access, and root does not appear to be able to get in there. I may well be able to get at it by booting to a live CD, but I don't have one with me at the moment, and would in any case be very interested to find what the problem is.

What are the permissions on /home/mike (#ls -l /home/mike).

I don't think that this is a permissions problem. I think that it's more likely to be a corruption of the inode during the power failure.

As I say, the ONLY place I can see the directory from is through mc, where it is prefixed by a "?". The time stamp reads 01/01/1970. I can't even access it to read the permissions list.

I know that reiser keeps copies of the superblock around the disk somewhere - I'll see what I can do with reiserfsck.

So much for journaling!!
