This whole Vista thing is the reason I'm leaving Windows. I figure I'd better get out now before it's too late. I just want a basic os like 95 or 98 - hell I can't even stand all the extras that were thrown into XP. XP's skin sucked, and the new Aero desktop looks stupid too. You can get better themes with Windowblinds and use less resources. I want an operating system, not a resource hogging video game that trys to act like one.

Besides, DOOM3 runs in Linux and Unreal 2007 probably will too... so I need Windows why?

Penguin of Wonder 09-27-2006 06:17 PM

lol odds are neither of those will run under Vista anyway.

I'm quite confident that UT2007 shall run on Linux, check here

powerwindows 09-29-2006 08:09 AM

Hey I'm counting on it too - but with some of these companies you never know right? Not that I can't live without UT, but it sure would be nice to have.

Well, truth be told, I can't... and if UT2007 doesn't come for linux I'm going to kick the nearest person to me... then install it on windoze, but against my free will let me tell you...
I'm confident of Epic Games, those guys really know the power of linux and acknowledge that some part of the gaming community is moving away from windoze looking for better alternatives. They won't let me down ;)

Dralnu 09-29-2006 05:00 PM

I havn't gotten UT2004 (don't see a version of it, plus I'm broke, lol).

I'm looking for someone who will start producing some good, free games for Linux. Epic seems like an interesting group, but I want to see some work of there personally before I go on further.

Yahoo vs Google

What do you guys think? Is the technology behind current and soon-to-be versions of Linux as advanced as Vista is claiming to be? How many of those features sound like a rip-off of what Linux already offers? Finally, does anyone here plan on switching to Vista from XP or, dare I say it, switching to Vista from Linux?

First, how seriously can we take a yahoo (mini Microsoft) lover? Do you love them for changing all their on-line features to favor IE users? Do you love them because they've climbed into bed with the Evil Empire to turn back Linux? Or do you hate Google because they have a summer coding program for Linux students, a Linux version of Google Earth or on and on the list could go.

Second: Because the Evil Empire is truly evil they sent me a couple of copies of the 65bit version to beta. Aerographics is not an overlay for Xgl especially the way they've deployed it. My impression of Vista was/is a lot of eye candy for a cleaned up version of XP. After copying the best features of Thunderbird email and Firefox browser (and admitting it) their browser has taken a turn for the better. IE7 allows for multiple home pages displayed as thumbnails - and that's the end of their ennovations.

Their security system (HA!) will drive you nuts in a heartbeat. You are forced to use PC-Cillan's just for Vista beta. Nothing else works.

The Vista desktop search engine is fast but no better than Beagle.

So my bottom line is: SMOKE AND MIRRORS! And nothing worth paying for an upgrade even if it were $5.

Yeah, the choices and color in the XP skins were slim and gross. The silver was really the only choice that looked half way decent.

And yep, Doom 3 runs well under linux.

onto other parts now:

I did try Vista (after using linux for a few months now) and was very unimpressed with it. I spent maybe 10 minutes of it before I got rid of the beta. I also used Windows XP x64 edition to play COD2. Otherwise, back to linux.

In some other post, how many will switch from XP to Vista or "dare to say" linux to windows. um, no, I'll stick with linux.
I had windows for ages, and after a few months of linux (mandrake/mandriva), I tossed out windows XP, yes, I TOSSED OUT XP! and don't regret it either. I NEVER thought in my LIFE, that I'd toss out windows and use something that I originally saw as being complicated and annoying (linux), but after trying a more modern linux distro, that all changed.
yep, Windows was in the TRASH, not Recycling bin, but TRASH :)

That article, I think in the VERY FIRST POST in here, it mentioned something like "probably in a five years, you'd have windows vista as your desktop by default", um, no.
I think mandriva would be, or suse, mandriva 2012 :)

I don't care much for Windows. let them hurt the companies, maybe, JUST MAYBE, more will be more gracious in supporting linux. but that may just be a dream.

angryfirelord 10-09-2006 10:04 AM

People have to see that downtime is NOT supposed to happen frequently and that there are better alternatives. The only way that people can get to try linux is by either some sort of advertisement or YOU show them the difference. (that's excluding people who are stubborn and won't switch)

Has Vista got multiple desktops?

NO, but with Aero Graphics you can stack a lot of open programs, turn them sideways to store on the screen and then rotate them back when you want them. You can also use sticky notes on the backs of web pages. But nope, they don't use multiple desktops, but can run multiple screens if your video driver can handle it - and with the new hardware requirements they can handle it.

Thats lame. Sounds like it would just create unwanted clutter to me.

POW - LOL!

Yeah I totally agree. I have been a beta tester for Vista from the beginning. The day they announced the RC2 release my doorbell announced the arrival of my DVD's by DHL Carrier. So I broke my promise to never again mess with Windows and stuffed it in the machine. Nothing new except they've put Outlook Express back in the package.

1. It will require a hardware upgrade to my HP AMD64 machine. Vista cannot recognize my graphics card nor my audio card.

2. It now has a statment in the EULA that you don't own the software of the rights to it but are leasing it. So you're paying a fortune for a program they can recall the second they want.

3. The EULA also explains that by signing (clicking) you agree to the Ad Ware that they are installing to collect information on the condition of their software and to make sure that all of your programs are genuine.

4. Because the software anticipates an advanced graphics card it tears the screen up with lines about every 10 minutes.

5. You are limited to a choice of ONE antivirus program and you'd better have it because they are still finding holes in Vista. And that program is a special beta from Trend Data built for Vista (read - backdoor passes granted).

There are more but I'm trying not to rant about Vista. I happen to also be running five copies of SuSE Linus Enterprise Desktop with Xgl graphics that does everything Windows hopes to ste.. I mean learn how to do. There is absolutely nothing in Windows not covered better in SLED 10.. . well except the hearts game :-)

Dralnu 10-09-2006 05:44 PM

There is a hearts clone you can get online for Linux. Its in Portage.

Thanks I have it but its not as much fun as the pouting characters in the Bicycle version. You know now that I mention it I've never tried to run the Bicycle games under WINE. But mostly I was trying to end on a positive not for the evil empire.

I agree with your signature about Live CDs saving systems. I bought the O'Riely book knoppix Hacks and have fixed both Windoze machines and several Linux boxes. I also use the password test on my networked computers.
