xfs doesn't work

Anyone got general guidelines on how to diagnose xfs problems ?
My xfs is starting successfully with no error messages generated (that I can
find), however the screen is painted like gibberish - partial icons, missing
menus etc.
Thereafter I shutdown and work in console mode.

I'm running Mandrake-Linux 7.2 with W98, NT Server, W2000 & Linux loaded on
my hard disk

Any help much appreciated
