I have recently installed Redhat Linux 8 on my system and it installed fine and even booted fine, but when I try to 'startx'
I get an error message saying the X server crashed. It also said that it couldn't find any configuration files, even though I know I configured it using xf86config. Also it says:

Fatal Error:
no screens found

and I have know idea what that means. I tried reinstalling, but each time I get the same exact message, and I know that during installation I installed X Window, so it must be there somewhere. If anybody can help me at all, or know what's wrong I would greatly appreciate it. If not, I was thinking that if I de-grade down to RHL 7.3 that I might not get any problems, but I don't know.

RH8 is funny like that. I am having the same issues with BSD. In any case, check to see if you video ard is supported, or you have enough RAM. That was my issue with RH

How do I check if my hardware is supported or not? I think my graphics card is an Intel something, but I'm not sure. Also I have 32MB RAM and the manual said that was enough.

When you say 32MB or RAM, I'm assuming you're talking about RAM on your video card.... (which I don't think is what the prior post was referring to).

Short of taking out the video card and looking at it, I don't know how to find out what it is (but I bet there's some command-line method I don't know).

At any rate, I was able to solve some X problems I've had with RH 8 by reading the document on the docs CD that talks about rpm. In there is some information about the rpm -V (verify) function. You can basically use this to check for any package problems (pieces missing):

rpm -Va > problems.txt

Then take a look at problems.txt and see what you can find. I was missing some pieces of some of the fundamental XFree86 packages (XFree86-libs in fact); what I had to do was replace the installed package:

rpm -i --replacepkgs /mnt/cdrom/RPMS/XFree86-libs-<picture the version# here>-<build>.i386.rpm

Like I said, I don't know if this'll show you anything or not, but it's quick and painless.

Uh, I should have mentioned that the output from

rpm -Va

isn't entirely clear. If it doesn't say "missing" or something else that clearly indicates a problem; then the line isn't really saying there's a problem (apparently).

Did you try xf86config and choose VESA generic driver and try with 16 bit color sometimes 24 bit causes problems.

Or try redhat-config-xfree86

"X" will also creash if you do not have enough RAM. Did you do a graphical or command line installation of RH8? IN the graphical one it should show you what vidoe card you have. I have had problems with low end videos cards if the resolution is set to high. But you never even got into XWindows did you?

I'm sure I have enough RAM, 32MB, but somebody said earlier that I didn't have enough Video RAM, so I'm going to try to go into the BIOS and change that.

P.S. for some reason 'redhat-config-xf86' doesn't work. It says:

Probe returned bogus values (or something)
trying fresh start...
