X freezes when closing window

Since the incedent described in this thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...57#post3890657

X just freezes whenever I close a window, I have to kill X when that happens. For some reason it doesn't do that in TWM, though.

What should I do? I hope this gets fixed quick because I don't even have a decent desktop any more! :(

What is in
Code:

/var/log/Xorg.*.log
?
(It'll probably be Xorg.0.log, depending on how many X sessions you're running and the one thats got the problem)

Here it is (I found it in /var/log, had to append ".txt" for the forum to let it through).

EDIT: Wanted to say that this issue hasn't happened since I booted in the morning, because I am using TWM (it does not seem to suffer this problem). I am not sure if this means it is not in the log.

jamescondron 03-09-2010 05:21 AM

Is there an old one there from when X last cacked it's self?

MTK358 03-09-2010 05:22 AM

What do you mean "an old one"?

There was a file called "Xorg.0.log.old" there, though.

jamescondron 03-09-2010 05:24 AM

Well you'll be able to compare the last edited time against roughly when the error last occurred, but yeah, try the .old one; ought to be the right one.

(If not you have the fun task of replicating the error to provide the logs, which is a pain for you)

I don't remember the time when it happened yesterday, but I still provided the old log.

It is actually not that hard to replicate the glitch, it's just that I'll have to close all my windows.

I just have to do this:

Quit X.
Run "xinit /usr/bin/pekwm"
Launch an application that creates a window.
Close the window.
Watch X freeze to a halt.
Go to another VT
Kill X
Run "xinit /usr/bin/twm"
Report back here

jamescondron 03-09-2010 05:37 AM

Well, there is nothing in X that would suggest this, or at least that I can tell. No clear error.

I'm sorry to say you may have to replicate this and show us faillog and, if different, lastlog. (Both in that dir)

EDIT:
What happens when you use the Stable X server? You may just have found a bug that wants reporting, is all

I decided to replicate the glitch. I repeated the steps I described above and now I'll give you the log file:

I was just using the X server form the Arch Linux repository. Maybe it is a bug.

The funny thing is that this glitch happens in PekWM and Xfwm4, but not in TWM.

jamescondron 03-09-2010 05:43 AM

Sorry, nothing there. What is in faillog and lastlog?

But also, and yes I did the annoying 'edit post instead of posting new', does this happen on the stable version of X?

jamescondron 03-09-2010 05:44 AM

Oh, you answered it ;)

Yeah, fill out a bug report and try back a version or so to the Stable if you can

lastlog was too big for the forum, so I compressed it with gzip.

Remember to remove the "txt", this is not a text file, it's a gzip file!

The "txt" is for the forum to allow it.

Now I need to figure out if it's possible to downgrade using pacman (Arch's package manager).

Anyway, these are all the xorg packages I have installed:

    X.Org keyboard input driver
local/xf86-input-mouse 1.5.0-1 (xorg-input-drivers)
    X.org mouse input driver
local/xf86-video-ati 6.12.4-3 (xorg-video-drivers)
    X.org ati video driver
local/xf86-video-radeonhd 1.3.0-1 (xorg-video-drivers)

EDIT: I am using the xf86-video-ati driver, if that matters.

MTK358 03-09-2010 06:02 AM

YES!!!

I downgraded xorg-server and it works perfect!

I found out that pacman stores old packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg, and I used pacman -U to install the second to newest one.

Now I have a few questions:

How do I keep pacman from upgrading X to the buggy version when I update my system with "pacman -Syu"?

And what when the bug will be fixed and I will want to upgrade X?

How do I file a bug report and where?
