Why I can't ping winxp host form redhat linux guest in VMWare
Hello guys,
I installed redhat 9 in VMware under WinXP host.
At first, "no link present" prompt during booting. After modifing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, I can access internet from redhat. The problem is why I can not ping the host(WINXP) from redhat, but from WinXP to redhat, the ping has no problem.
when ping, it says:
51 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet lost,time 50012ms
I already tried several configurations of VMware,NAT, Bridge, Host-only.
All the three netmasks are 255.255.255.0 and the WinXP netmask is also the same.
I redo all the three settings, and something changes after I turn off my "Norton Internet Security".
(1)Bridged:
WinXP(192.168.0.100) ping redhat: OK
redhat(192.168.0.102) ping WinXP: error as above
(2)Host-only:
WinXP(192.168.0.100) ping redhat: OK
redhat(192.168.2.128) ping WinXP: Network is unreachable
(3)NAT:
WinXP(192.168.0.100) ping redhat: OK
Redhat(192.168.3.10) ping WinXP: OK
Now I can use ftp(XP) and vsftpd(redhat) to copy files in NAT setting.
Is VMWare should be like this??
Regards!
Distribution: RHEL/CentOS/SL 5 i386 and x86_64 pata for IDE in use

Good for you, glad you got the NAT configuration working.
Yes you can use ftp to copy files with the NAT setting, but why not try samba also??
FYI: you really should consider using a supported version of Linux, if staying with the Red Hat family try FC5 or one of the freely available RHEL binary compatible distros like CentOS or Scientific Linux. Red Hat stopped supporting RHL9 over two years ago and Fedora legacy will end life support on October 1, 2006
