While XMMS is outputing sound, sound from other programs doesn't output untill after.

I'm playing music in XMMS and chatting on gaim, when the song is over all the sound that gaim should have played while XMMS was playing starts playing. So after every song I get *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* (for all the messages that I got).

Can only one program use the soundcard at a time in Linux? Or is this just some configuration problem?

There's a few different possible ways of dealing with
sound in Linux ... an app can directly use ALSA or
OSS, which will result in your applications being unable
to output noise at the same time.

They can use arts or esd (KDE or Gnome respectively)
sound daemons, which should allow you to play sounds
simultaneously (sound-hardware permitting).

Cheers,
Tink

Okay cool, I'll go google how to do that.. if anyone knows any sites with information on this it would be nice if they could point me at them though.
