I installed Linux Red Hat 8.0 on my old "verymanypartsbutorginallycompac", which went fine, and the installation is finished, with one root user and one standard. But then I start it all up a thing called "eth0" fails, and when i comes to localhost.localdomain I can't log in with any user. I read somwhere that eth0 has do do with the internet, but there is no connection to it? What is it, what can I do?

Please help!

eth0 has nothing to do with not being able to log in.
eth0 is your network interface. By saying it failed to bring up eth0, it means that it cant start your internet. Thats not the worst problem here. You cant log in... Most likley you typed your username and/or password wrong on either the install or now. Remember that both the username and password are case-sensitive. If you still cant log in, either re-install, or boot off of a live cd and edit your /etc/shadow file.

Thank you very much for the answer, now i've got a cabel to the comp, and eth0 is [OK], but i still cant log in, so you were right. Though, I'm absolutely sure i spelled both password and username correct (and without capslock), and i've already reinstalled it one time, and it did not help. What do you do when you boot-off?

Basically, boot off your rescue CD and mount your root partition (with the mount command), then edit your /etc/shadow (pico /etc/shadow is an easy way to do that) and remove the encrypted field for the user you want to log in as (it's the second field -- fields are separated by colons). Then you will be able to log in as that user with no password, and then you can use the passwd command from the command line to reset the password.

BTW, before you try this, maybe you can tell us the exact error you get when you try to log in. Is it just a login failed message, or is there some other error? Are you trying to login as root or as a normal user?

With both root & normal user. I dunno, both my passwords are numbers.
May that be the problem?

Just numbers? That shouldn't cause a problem (although passwords of all one type of character aren't the greatest in the world). Maybe it's something with num lock not being on (unlikely)? Otherwise, you're going to have to restore off your rescie CD or signle user mode.
