Mostly SOLVED!

Dudes!

O-K, I have this problem functionally solved.....

On my 'puter, went to the Crunchbang menu->Network->Remote File Systems.
Clicked Remote File Systems, and something called Gigolo opened up, and VIOLA![sic]- My camera was listed, and I could access the 16GB card in it!!!!

With it connected thusly, lsusb now says:

Code:
bob@crunchbang2:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04b0:0362 Nikon Corp.
Great!

Now, based on that info, if anyone has any ideas why the 'puter won't recognize the camera or card as described previously in this thread, and can solve that, so that that camera will just be recognized/mounted automatically when I plug it into the USB, that'd be a real convenience.

If not...at least it's perfectly workable as described above in this post.

To everyone who responded: Thanks for all of your help!

Interesting: I got a new computer last week, and a fresh install of the latest release of Bunsenlabs Linux.....and it does the exact same thing as described in my initial post! Thank goodness I discovered the work-around, as described above. Just weird that no one seems to know why this is.....
