[SOLVED] VirtualBox install won't run vagrant up

Hello World!

New linux user here (3 days). I am trying to set up vagrant with virtual box. I tried going to the actual website to download the correct virtual box file and extensions as well as using the terminal to sudo apt-get install virtualbox. I have run upadtes and upgrades to make sure my terminal is up to date. When I have virtual box and vagrant up I get a warning:

WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist.
Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate
headers, most likely linux-headers-generic.

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

I have tried uninstalling vagrant and virtual box (extensions included) and reinstalling but can't seem to get vagrant up to run. Thanks for your help! Advice and tips welcome!

Welcome to LQ forums.

Open a Terminal and perform the following commands separately:

sudo apt update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

You also need to install VirtualBox Guest Additions:
Open Devices menu (at the top) in VirtualBox and choose Insert Guest Additions CD image

When you login you should see the CD image in the background. Open the Terminal Emulator again and run the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run file.

If that doesn't work start again from scratch.

I figured out that I needed to be in my homestead file to run vagrant up. Now I just need to update vagrant from 2.0.2 to 2.2.4. Thanks for your help!
