Unable to download GParted

Running latest Ubuntu; dual boot with Vista - Ubuntu is the default. Acer laptop, twin core 2500 CPU, 3 gig ram, 500gb HD. It came with that HDD partitioned into 2 x 250gb (approx) Running Vista.

I would like to re-install to eliminate all my mistakes. I would also like to give Linux a major size partition. But unable to download G Parted (times out after running happily for 20 or so mgb - it just stops. Tried at least 3 times - twice under Ubuntu and once via Vista.

I live in Australia in a smallish city called Mildura, run on "Mobile Network Broadband" (maybe there's the problem) and will be most grateful for any help/ideas/ er- sympathy :-) etc

Try the following command:
Even if the download stops in the middle, you will issue this command again and it will again be re-started from where it left not from the beginning,
Code:

wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download

Desdd57 10-02-2010 04:26 PM

Anisha. Thank you for your response, I am indebted to you. I will try the command you suggest this afternoon. (It's Sunday morning here)
In answer to your question re the blue screen. I have to do a restart because when I get the blank (blue) screen it will not respond to right or left click or any keyboard inputs. However the power shutdown still works and after it does its shutdown thing, then I restart and everything is fine again. I guess the blank screen happens about once every 10 to 15 starts.

Aquarius_Girl 10-03-2010 03:15 AM

Des,

Another suggestion:
1. Do not club different topics in the same thread, people may not notice it.
e.g.:
You should have created two threads with following titles in Linux-Software and Linux Distributions->Ubuntu respectively.
Quote:

GParted download 'times out' after 20MB
Quote:

Ubuntu goes blank after bootup, shows no icons/panels
2. Creative thread titles may create problems for you, e.g. since I am not a native English speaker, I was not very sure what does "deserted" mean ?

How did you start *quadrapassel* ? Since you said there is no icons/panels ? You started it through command line ?

Thank you Anisha : they are two different problems. 1 Is the blank screen startup where only the power button works 1 time in approx 15, The other is that during use the program slows right down so that in the QP game it would take 90 sec for the blocks to reach the bottom. Again the cure is to restart.
Thank you very much for the download address - Des

[QUOTE=anishakaul;4116159]Des,

I honestly don't know how I did that I thought I had created 2 separate threads. My fault[/COLOR]

2. Creative thread titles may create problems for you, e.g. since I am not a native English speaker, I was not very sure what does "deserted" mean ?

Yes I take your point, and you are right. Deserted means 'nothing there' For example : If I say "The hall was deserted of people" I would be saying there were no people there. Where I used t before I was saying the screen has no icons or a curser.
BTW you seem to speak excellent English to me, Bht you do have that dry Indian wit. Which I think is great :)

You are welcome :)

One thing which I have experienced lately is : latest Ubuntu releases are rarely stable !!

So far the only Ubuntu release I found to be painless was of version 9.04 !

Though I cannot help you with the blank screen problem but I can suggest you to use : Linux Mint 9 Fluxbox. I recently installed it on my external harddisk and it has not given me any problems till now. It is based on Ubuntu and is said to be much better than Ubuntu for the newbies !

Check this out:
http://www.linuxmint.com/

Code:

wget -c http://mirror.optus.net/linuxmint/isos/stable/9/linuxmint-9-fluxbox-cd-i386.iso
and were you able to download gParted completely with that link and command ?

:D Well, I personally like dry/sarcastic humor and I already knew what "deserted" means. My only point was that since many people here are not native English speakers, they may not bother to "guess" or "lookup" the hidden meanings of the "creative titles" and thus your threads may get ignored ;)

and what is "bht" ?

Desdd57 10-05-2010 12:43 AM

I was half way through this answer - when I decided to check out your profile, and I see that you are a pleasant looking young woman. I am an old man soon to be a great grand father. But I digress - when I came back to this page, my half written answer was gone. Oh well!

'bht' is a typing error - it should read 'but'

I haven't tried the command line yet, but I will shortly. and will post the result here when that has happened.

I installed Linux Mint about a year ago, and was going ok I think, but my friend who recently loaded UBUNTU talked me into changing to Ubuntu

Anisha - hi again

The download started well. - went to 14% then stopped. After some time I closed the prompt and started it again, it did as you said restarted from 14% which is where it left off. then it stopped again at 23% So I repeated the process - but now it is "awaiting a response" and from the time taken so far the remote host is not gonna answere??

Any thoughts ? Des

Aquarius_Girl 10-06-2010 10:16 PM

Hello back,

I have put it for downloading here again, I'll check if I am facing the same problem too. Meanwhile you can try and see what happens from a different mirror. Open that link in a browser and select a different mirror.

Aquarius_Girl 10-06-2010 10:18 PM

example :
scroll this bar till end and see the red color text
Code:

wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download?use_mirror=netcologne

Aquarius_Girl 10-06-2010 10:44 PM

I tried from both the links and they are working fine here. See what happens from a different mirror. Also check whether it is happening only with GParted or other softwares too, but try it with wget -c command only, to know exactly what's happening.
P.S.
SMS language is not permitted on this official forum. Kindly take care to *(spell your words out)

and I saw your comment on my blog named "Addiction" today, the last line made me laugh :)

OK I hate to admit it, but I am somewhat floundering here. You suggested that I try a bowser rather than a Terminal. To use such I found I had to remove the wget -c command, (My browser is Mozilla.) So now are you telling me to go back to the terminal, or is there some way I can use the command with the browser?
Sorry about this but I don't know how to change mirrors, so I Googled for alternative mirror names, picked one in Indonesia and tried to replace the mirror name at the end of your line but the paste would not work. When I finish here I will go straight to the terminal.
Next you mentioned two links - you have lost me there
? What two links. Perhaps I am in over my ancient head here :)

Regarding the SMS language - no problem.

Glad I can still make someone laugh :)

Bye and thanks again for all your help

Aquarius_Girl 10-07-2010 03:09 AM

Step 1: This link gives all mirrors of GParted : http://sourceforge.net/settings/mirr...ve-0.6.4-1.iso

Step 2: Select some mirror e.g: AARNet (Brisbane, Australia, AU), from that page and click on Use this mirror button at the bottom of that page.

Step 3: Step 2 will lead you to this page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gpar..._mirror=aarnet
If this page starts automatic download, click cancel, since we'll be downloading from the terminal not the browser.

Step 4: Copy the website address from the Address bar of the link shown in step 3 and paste that in the terminal with the wget -c command:

For pasting on terminal after you have copied the text, press shift with insert.
Code:

wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download?use_mirror=aarnet
I tried all this on my computer, it is working flawlessly.
Similarly you can try it from different mirrors and see if that helps you.

Also check if this problem is occurring only with GParted or when you download other softwares, they also get stuck in the middle !

Aquarius_Girl 10-07-2010 03:21 AM

Please forgive me since I am not a native English speaker. I seriously did not know that *kindly* was a rude word.

and when you say "Bye" at the end of the post, I read it as if you are quitting the thread, if that is the case then please let me know so that I do not post here further.

I have edited that section out for it has only confused you. "kindly"is not a rude word - but the formation of the phrase makes it appear to be - er - well sort of bossy. Forgive me for even bringing that up. You are doing an extremely good job and you should be getting accolades and not criticism from this pedantic old man. No I am not quitting the thread and you are right, "bye" can send a message of "The End". I think here in this country it is used in the sense of "see you later" which (although I wont actually see you) is what I meant.

And thank you for your wonderful patience in providing me with step by step instructions. Anisha, I have tried you to the end but you are still here offering friendly and helpful advise. For this I am truly grateful

regards - Des

PS I'll let you know tomorrow (in Australia) how things went

Aquarius_Girl 10-07-2010 05:27 AM

You should not have removed that English lessons you gave me, I loved reading that. How would I have known otherwise that the sentence beginning with "kindly" was sort of "bossy" ?

I've done a little Google ing for you Hope you find this interesting

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/.../t-373117.html

Search the site for the word "bossy" if you don't want to read it, Although I have read 3 parts o it and found it interesting.

By the way is there somewhere else that this interesting trivia should be sent to, rather than this thread? Perhaps you should start a blog on Indian English. I just don't want to be breaking any rules :) Also If you want me to I can send a memory copy of the "English lesson" - but where should I send it? is it OK here? It will only be what I remember of it - Des

Aquarius_Girl 10-07-2010 06:36 AM

Where did you dig up that *very* interesting article ? All those statements w.r.t word "kindly" are true. In India we use those statements very frequently and no one ever pointed out that it is not correct/polite. That article was really amusing.

You are free to send it to me through a private message. Click on my profile and then click on Contact Info tab. There you can either attach a text file or insert the text straight way.

Thanks.

Desdd57 10-07-2010 11:45 PM

Had a busy day, but the good news is the program finished loading - yet I am suspicious that it has bypassed some of the download where it stalled. Do you know what files I should have and (Embarrassed) where I should find them. I have done a search and 6 files turned up - three are message files, one is the icon, one says its on my desktop (but it's not) and one is the raw CD Image claiming to be 27.4 MB in size. Which is the cause of my suspicion as the download was nearly 130 MB. I haven't used your last suggestion yet, thought I'd run this by you 1st,
Des

Aquarius_Girl 10-07-2010 11:55 PM

Name of the software you downloaded is gparted-live-0.6.3-3.iso
If you opened the terminal and straightaway typed the wget -c command for downloading it, then your file will be in your home folder.

Open terminal and type this and show the exact output here:
Code:

ls | grep gparted

Well I have done this but cannot see a Contact Info tab, I have searched the site for it ????

However I noticed with some joy that you have accepted my friend request. And also I read your "Amusing....." blog with a great deal of pity for the newbie, who unfortunately had a terrible grasp of English (read her/his words), and I am quite sure he/she did not understand at all the instructions given, and that is why she/he didn't comply or answer questions because she couldn't. :) Do you agree??

Aquarius_Girl 10-08-2010 12:45 AM

What does this say ?
Code:

Where is that 27 MB raw file located on your computer ?

Desdd57 10-08-2010 12:45 AM

It's in a folder I created in the 'home' folder. It's called 'downloads' - there are quite a few folders and files contained in.

We have crossed lines the gparted 27meg is in Downloads is called "gparted-live-0.6.4-2.iso" and is a "raw CD image

The last command you sent reveals a lot gparted in the trash ?????. What a mess !!

Aquarius_Girl 10-08-2010 12:50 AM

I am getting "no such file or directory" The folder 'downloads' is on drive D (Windows) Data (Linux) and is inside the 'home folder' What is the syntax if I give it some navigation to find 'downloads?

I don't know what do you mean be drive D (Windows) Data (Linux) ? I have not seen C or D drives on Linux.

Have you done all this on Linux ? I am scared now !

LINUX COMMANDS ARE CASE SENSITIVE

On Linux when I open the terminal, following is how I navigate:
Code:

anisha@linux-uitj:~> ls
tarBalls
anisha@linux-uitj:~> cd tarBalls/
anisha@linux-uitj:~/tarBalls> ls | grep gparted
gparted-live-0.6.3-3.iso

For navigation commands you have:
Code:

cd directoryname
For getting to previous directory
Code:

cd ..
For getting to home directory
Code:

cd
For seeing the directory contents:
Code:

ls
For locating a file or directory:
Code:

locate filename

Yes I have done all this in Linux; Linux calls the drive DATA whereas Vista calls it drive D. But its the same physical drive. I don't explain myself very well do I :) Sorry.

I think I understand what you want in the name change, and it shall be done.

I read your last paragraph as if you intend to leave his thread - I hope that that is not what you mean. Please clarify this for me ??

I tried looking for a large download to test with but I had no luck - can you recommend one - I suspect that this whole problem may be due to my own provider

For testing you may try downloading Mint 700 MB ! Large enough..
Code:

Code:

cd Downloads

Yes it does have a capital D and that made it respond correctly. I now get

So you are in Linux, its a relief !!

For testing you may try downloading Mint 700 MB ! Large enough..
Code:

wget -c http://mirror.optus.net/linuxmint/isos/stable/9/linuxmint-9-fluxbox-cd-i386.iso

I think it will use up most of my remaining allowance I have to check if I have enough 1st

Yes I have 3.5 gig left -so I'll give it a try and let you know how it went

Edit 1/2 hr later: Stopped after 36 mb - will not restart?? I am going to phone my provider.:-/
Its 8:40 am Saturday here which means you are still in the land of nod or the land of Snore (sigh! in other words asleep :). And I may no hear from you until Monday?

Time here :- 23:00 Saturday 9th Oct :)

From where did you run that wget -c command ?

From here ?
Code:

des@des:~$
or from here ?
Code:

des@des:~/Downloads$
The gparted iso was in Downloads directory. So if you RAN the wget -c command from the Downloads directory, then try running it again from the same place.

If the software gparted was downloaded completely previously, the download will NOT start again through the wget -c command. wget will tell you that the download has been finished and there is nothing more to do.

What did wget -c say when you ran it again ? "awaiting a response" ? nothing else ? I am surprised, it doesn't happen here ! I can download any software very nicely through wget -c command ! Check out your provider.

I tried it with "cd Downloads" and without it; the results are exactly the same, both stopped at 36,679,288

As I only have a mobile phone with not much credit left until the 14th, I will ring my provider on Monday when it's quiet and therefore I won't be asked to hold for quite so long. (yes I'm a cheapskate and wont renew my prepaid until the expiry date) :)

Was LQ having some trouble yesterday ? I could not log in at all, could not even get to the server

Thanks again for your huge effort here - you are an asset.

Kind regards - Des

You have windows vista why not download and burn cd from that environment?

Well you are welcome and yes LQ was facing some problems yesterday. The Owner of the site stated this in Suggestions and Feedback forum: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...wntime-836971/

I was asking about gparted ! When you reissued the wget -c command, from the same place where you had earlier issued it for gparted, did the command restart from where it had left ?

I have changed the name and edited the first post. However the name only changed on the first post no where else ??

Thread title has been changed now, I had reported it and a Mod did the job.

Are you receiving the notification mails now ? Did you follow the Post number 36's screen shot ?

For attaching any file to the thread see the screenshot attached in post 36, there is a box titled Manage Attachments on the top of the circled area in that screenshot. Have a look there.

You can also control how many posts you want to display on a page, see this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...do=editoptions
Scroll down that page till you see the following attached screen.

How can I put this -er - it went back and tried to restart from the same place - but eventually it timed out - see screen shot (email).

To me it seemed uncanny that it stopped in exactly the same place - twice
