Unable to download GParted
Running latest Ubuntu; dual boot with Vista - Ubuntu is the default. Acer laptop, twin core 2500 CPU, 3 gig ram, 500gb HD. It came with that HDD partitioned into 2 x 250gb (approx) Running Vista.
I would like to re-install to eliminate all my mistakes. I would also like to give Linux a major size partition. But unable to download G Parted (times out after running happily for 20 or so mgb - it just stops. Tried at least 3 times - twice under Ubuntu and once via Vista. I live in Australia in a smallish city called Mildura, run on "Mobile Network Broadband" (maybe there's the problem) and will be most grateful for any help/ideas/ er- sympathy :-) etc Des |

Even if the download stops in the middle, you will issue this command again and it will again be re-started from where it left not from the beginning, Code:
wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download Quote:

Anisha. Thank you for your response, I am indebted to you. I will try the command you suggest this afternoon. (It's Sunday morning here)
In answer to your question re the blue screen. I have to do a restart because when I get the blank (blue) screen it will not respond to right or left click or any keyboard inputs. However the power shutdown still works and after it does its shutdown thing, then I restart and everything is fine again. I guess the blank screen happens about once every 10 to 15 starts. |
Des,
Another suggestion: 1. Do not club different topics in the same thread, people may not notice it. e.g.: You should have created two threads with following titles in Linux-Software and Linux Distributions->Ubuntu respectively. Quote:

How did you start *quadrapassel* ? Since you said there is no icons/panels ? You started it through command line ? |

Thank you very much for the download address - Des |
[QUOTE=anishakaul;4116159]Des,
Another suggestion: 1. Do not club different topics in the same thread, people may not notice it. I honestly don't know how I did that I thought I had created 2 separate threads. My fault[/COLOR] 2. Creative thread titles may create problems for you, e.g. since I am not a native English speaker, I was not very sure what does "deserted" mean ? Yes I take your point, and you are right. Deserted means 'nothing there' For example : If I say "The hall was deserted of people" I would be saying there were no people there. Where I used t before I was saying the screen has no icons or a curser. BTW you seem to speak excellent English to me, Bht you do have that dry Indian wit. Which I think is great :) |

One thing which I have experienced lately is : latest Ubuntu releases are rarely stable !! So far the only Ubuntu release I found to be painless was of version 9.04 ! Though I cannot help you with the blank screen problem but I can suggest you to use : Linux Mint 9 Fluxbox. I recently installed it on my external harddisk and it has not given me any problems till now. It is based on Ubuntu and is said to be much better than Ubuntu for the newbies ! Check this out: http://www.linuxmint.com/ Code:
wget -c http://mirror.optus.net/linuxmint/isos/stable/9/linuxmint-9-fluxbox-cd-i386.iso |

and what is "bht" ? |
I was half way through this answer - when I decided to check out your profile, and I see that you are a pleasant looking young woman. I am an old man soon to be a great grand father. But I digress - when I came back to this page, my half written answer was gone. Oh well!
'bht' is a typing error - it should read 'but' I haven't tried the command line yet, but I will shortly. and will post the result here when that has happened. I installed Linux Mint about a year ago, and was going ok I think, but my friend who recently loaded UBUNTU talked me into changing to Ubuntu Des |
Thanks for the compliments :)

Hi Anita - Have posted in your profile blog - the lurking one.
Glad we got the "bht" sorted I'm definitely not a "Big Hunky Teenager" :) I have tried the command line 3 times this is the result - and I did use copy and paste des@des:~$ wget -c http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pro...mirror=citylan [1] 3018 [2] 3019 des@des:~$ --2010-10-05 16:53:50-- http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pro...ted%2Ffiles%2F Resolving downloads.sourceforge.net... 216.34.181.59 Connecting to downloads.sourceforge.net|216.34.181.59|:80... connected. The name is Anisha not Anita
Try out the following : Code:
wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download |

Response
Anisha - hi again
The download started well. - went to 14% then stopped. After some time I closed the prompt and started it again, it did as you said restarted from 14% which is where it left off. then it stopped again at 23% So I repeated the process - but now it is "awaiting a response" and from the time taken so far the remote host is not gonna answere?? Any thoughts ? Des |
Hello back,
I have put it for downloading here again, I'll check if I am facing the same problem too. Meanwhile you can try and see what happens from a different mirror. Open that link in a browser and select a different mirror. |
example :
scroll this bar till end and see the red color text Code:
wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download?use_mirror=netcologne |
I tried from both the links and they are working fine here. See what happens from a different mirror. Also check whether it is happening only with GParted or other softwares too, but try it with wget -c command only, to know exactly what's happening.
P.S. SMS language is not permitted on this official forum. Kindly take care to *(spell your words out) *© TBOne. ;) and I saw your comment on my blog named "Addiction" today, the last line made me laugh :) |
Quote:
Sorry about this but I don't know how to change mirrors, so I Googled for alternative mirror names, picked one in Indonesia and tried to replace the mirror name at the end of your line but the paste would not work. When I finish here I will go straight to the terminal. Next you mentioned two links - you have lost me there ? What two links. Perhaps I am in over my ancient head here :) Regarding the SMS language - no problem. Glad I can still make someone laugh :) Bye and thanks again for all your help |
Step 1: This link gives all mirrors of GParted : http://sourceforge.net/settings/mirr...ve-0.6.4-1.iso
Step 2: Select some mirror e.g: AARNet (Brisbane, Australia, AU), from that page and click on Use this mirror button at the bottom of that page. Step 3: Step 2 will lead you to this page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gpar..._mirror=aarnet If this page starts automatic download, click cancel, since we'll be downloading from the terminal not the browser. Step 4: Copy the website address from the Address bar of the link shown in step 3 and paste that in the terminal with the wget -c command: For pasting on terminal after you have copied the text, press shift with insert. Code:
wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download?use_mirror=aarnet Similarly you can try it from different mirrors and see if that helps you. Also check if this problem is occurring only with GParted or when you download other softwares, they also get stuck in the middle ! |
Please forgive me since I am not a native English speaker. I seriously did not know that *kindly* was a rude word.
and when you say "Bye" at the end of the post, I read it as if you are quitting the thread, if that is the case then please let me know so that I do not post here further. |
Quote:
And thank you for your wonderful patience in providing me with step by step instructions. Anisha, I have tried you to the end but you are still here offering friendly and helpful advise. For this I am truly grateful regards - Des PS I'll let you know tomorrow (in Australia) how things went |
You should not have removed that English lessons you gave me, I loved reading that. How would I have known otherwise that the sentence beginning with "kindly" was sort of "bossy" ?
|
Quote:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/.../t-373117.html Search the site for the word "bossy" if you don't want to read it, Although I have read 3 parts o it and found it interesting. By the way is there somewhere else that this interesting trivia should be sent to, rather than this thread? Perhaps you should start a blog on Indian English. I just don't want to be breaking any rules :) Also If you want me to I can send a memory copy of the "English lesson" - but where should I send it? is it OK here? It will only be what I remember of it - Des |
Where did you dig up that *very* interesting article ? All those statements w.r.t word "kindly" are true. In India we use those statements very frequently and no one ever pointed out that it is not correct/polite. That article was really amusing.

Thanks. |
Had a busy day, but the good news is the program finished loading - yet I am suspicious that it has bypassed some of the download where it stalled. Do you know what files I should have and (Embarrassed) where I should find them. I have done a search and 6 files turned up - three are message files, one is the icon, one says its on my desktop (but it's not) and one is the raw CD Image claiming to be 27.4 MB in size. Which is the cause of my suspicion as the download was nearly 130 MB. I haven't used your last suggestion yet, thought I'd run this by you 1st,
Des |
Name of the software you downloaded is gparted-live-0.6.3-3.iso
If you opened the terminal and straightaway typed the wget -c command for downloading it, then your file will be in your home folder. Open terminal and type this and show the exact output here: Code:
ls | grep gparted |

However I noticed with some joy that you have accepted my friend request. And also I read your "Amusing....." blog with a great deal of pity for the newbie, who unfortunately had a terrible grasp of English (read her/his words), and I am quite sure he/she did not understand at all the instructions given, and that is why she/he didn't comply or answer questions because she couldn't. :) Do you agree?? Edit #2:- AHA I have found the elusive tag it was hidin behind the famous arrows :) |

No that's a mistake - I found the tag in my own profile (have been updating) but not in Your Profile |

What does this say ?
Code:
locate gparted |
It's in a folder I created in the 'home' folder. It's called 'downloads' - there are quite a few folders and files contained in.
We have crossed lines the gparted 27meg is in Downloads is called "gparted-live-0.6.4-2.iso" and is a "raw CD image The last command you sent reveals a lot gparted in the trash ?????. What a mess !! |
then do :
Code:
cd downloads Code:
ls | grep gparted |
Quote:
I am getting "no such file or directory" The folder 'downloads' is on drive D (Windows) Data (Linux) and is inside the 'home folder' What is the syntax if I give it some navigation to find 'downloads? Check your email |
Quote:
Have you done all this on Linux ? I am scared now ! LINUX COMMANDS ARE CASE SENSITIVE On Linux when I open the terminal, following is how I navigate: Code:
anisha@linux-uitj:~> ls Code:
cd directoryname Code:
cd .. Code:
cd Code:
ls Code:
locate filename Quote:
Scroll down that window and you'll see a title "Thread Subscription". Below it : Notification type. Select Instant Email notification if its not already selected. I have attached the screen shot below: |
Its time to change your thread title now to something like :
Unable to download "GParted" through "wget -c" Please edit your first post to keep the relevant question. This may help other people to notice your thread and they may jump in to help you too ! |

I think I understand what you want in the name change, and it shall be done. I read your last paragraph as if you intend to leave his thread - I hope that that is not what you mean. Please clarify this for me ?? I tried looking for a large download to test with but I had no luck - can you recommend one - I suspect that this whole problem may be due to my own provider Des |

From where did you run that wget -c command ? From here ? Code:
des@des:~$ Code:
des@des:~/Downloads$ If the software gparted was downloaded completely previously, the download will NOT start again through the wget -c command. wget will tell you that the download has been finished and there is nothing more to do. Quote:
