Are you receiving the notification mails now ? Did you follow the Post number 36's screen shot ?

Yes I had noticed he title now changed - thanks for that.

If you mean by "follow" Did I understand the codes - then - yes I found that very informative. If you mean did I follow your instructions - then No I did not, and I still do not get notification. Unless I have posted myself, then it tells me about my own post. But anyway I check here every time I come on line so it hasn't been important yet - but I will check that out and follow instructions soon.

There; I just went away and did that it is now set to give me "Instant Notification" :) :)

Hope you have had a nice weekend, I have, I've only just got home from visiting a friend in Hospital. Then I watched Formula 1, followed by MotoGT racing bikes, then I came here and found your posts.

Thanks for the info on attaching files, that may come in handy again.

I hope I have answered all your questions ok, please let me know if you have any more Q's or need clarification an any way.

I think it is your Provider who needs to give some clarifications now !

and for getting an Instant email notification for ALL threads, again follow this link : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...do=editoptions

Look there for a title : Default Thread Subscription Mode.

I have contacted ISP (Dodo Mobile Broadband). After 50 minutes on the phone it was decided that I should try another computer using the same modem. However there is quite a bit of information to be found and complaints about Dodo's time outs.

So what I'm going to do is take my laptop over to the library tomorrow (not open on Mondays) where they have free wireless broadband, and I'll try to download gparted there, I will be using the same computer but a different ISP.

Check this out http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1149157

I can see a new provider coming up

Do you think that this post is still in the right place or should it be shifted from "Newbies" to "General" ?

IMO underlying operating system does not make any difference in proper download of a software. The only two things that make a difference are:
1. The tool which you are using for downloading.
2. The quality of service your provider is providing.

This thread can be shifted to Linux-Software and if you wish, click the Report button of the first post of this thread and ask the moderators to move this thread.

And I still think you should shift from Ubuntu to latest Mint-Fluxbox !

What does "IMO" stand for?

I am at the local Libray using their Wi-fi - It is Broadband but only runs at 50 to 60K/s. However it has started agin from 0%, and is downloading Linux Mint. Going to take another 3 hs at this speed - but it's doing it at last !!!

I couldn't start the gparted though; it came up ERROR 404. And you had sent me a few different code lines to try - so I tried them all. But no dice.

Would yo like me to try from the web page ,or would you rather send some moe code

In My Opinion (IMO)
Try for Gparted instead, the following link is still working here.

You mean this didn't work ?
Code:

wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download?use_mirror=aarnet
It is working here for me.

Which codes did you try and for what ?

I tried all the codes that I could find on this thread for gparted, they all showed ERROR 404. But success is found wiht Mint, I am to finish loading the "Mint" file today (Wednesday) it still has another two hrs to go and they had to close for the night. So I'll do that (finish the download) and then I'll try this code you just sent me. I am sure it will work - it's just very slow. It has shown us though that the fault is with my ISP, and I am going to have to change. Once I am successful in downloading gparted, then this thread can be marked as solved

I have another thread in mind about Open Office Word and Hyper-links "How can you make a hyperlink to two things - but not do the second thing until the 1st one is finished. For example play two mp3 musc files, but obviously not at the same time. What think ye? How would you phrase the title, and what part of the forum would you place it?

Just thinking with gparted - I may need to removed all the old traces of gparted that are on this computer to avoid that error ? Your thoughts are?

Don't know whaat happened yesterday but "gparted" has now successfully loaded this morning. It finished at 11:30 EST Australia (Which is 6am New Delhi). My computer was used for the download, using the local Library's Wi-fi. So by eliminating my usual ISP the problem is solved. The fault is with my provider, even though they will not admit it.

Anisha: Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the suggested new thread - see post 59. It would be very useful to me if that could be solved. Should Imark this thread solved now?

Thankyou - Des

I hope you know that you are supposed to burn the downloaded ISO as an IMAGE on a CD.

I have not understood this question clearly so I cannot guide you on a proper title. Go ahead with creating the new thread and then you may ask the repliers there about the proper thread title (if you wish) and secondly you do not have to wait for one thread to finish before you can start another. Many threads can go in parallel. Only thing I can advise you is that write the thread title as much descriptive as you can. and for the questions which do not belong to a particular domain I use Linux-Newbie or Linux-General forums.

re written paragraph

In Open Office Word Processor. Is it possible to make a hyperlink do two things, or, in other words: accomplish more than one task - but not start the second task until the 1st one is finished. For example play two mp3 files, play them both, but in the appropriate order.

Multitasking Hyperlinks

Do you understand this? above? I have to make it so you can understand it otherwise nobody else will understand it either

Yes that is descriptive enough, and Multitasking Hyperlinks in OpenOffice Word can be a nice thread title !

and if you are able to locate that GParted ISO now, you can mark this thread solved.

OK er so what "SMS" language did I use? I can only find BTW (By the way) and u (you) in my posts.

Both of which are in the Internet Acronyms Dictionary ?

BTW is considered an Internet Acronyms in this forum and u is considered as SMS language text.

For further clarifications on this topic you may refer to the Moderators.

No I'm happy with you're answer - I can put up with exceptions :)

Aquarius_Girl 10-13-2010 12:36 AM

It is considered SMS language if single letters replace words:
Quote:

* be becomes b
* see becomes c
* okay becomes k
* okay cool becomes kk
* are becomes r
* you becomes u
* why becomes y
* ate becomes 8
* for becomes 4
but IMHO is considered a valid acronym for In My Humble Opinion on this forum.

Thanks - but I'm not that worried about it, I thought I had caught you out in a mistake and I was jumping in to point it out to you. But - you've set me straight (again) :) It's all happy; there is no need to bother an already busy moderator. I believe you - I accept what you are saying - It's all good - I'm backing off now - I will try very hard not use single letter abbreviation. :) Thank you for the dictionary site, I am finding that fascinating. So many synonyms - incredible! :)

Why do the seemingly simple things escape me?

I had this thread as solved but went back to unsolved as I cannot find the gparted download - Here is what I get from the "Locate gparted" command

des@des:~$ locate gparted

Where did you execute the wget command from EXACTLY ?

i.e. from here ?
Code:

des@des:~$
or from some where else ?

From wherever you ran that command, navigate to that directory through cd command and do an ls -l there.

also do:
Code:

cd /home/des/.local/share/Trash/files
ls -l

Have I extracted the correct information that you wanted ?

Seems to already have the file as it says:

Do I need to extract any other info because of that ?

I too have a GParted ISO downloaded through wget -c command in my home folder as you have done and I can see it lying there. And when I re-issued the command wget -c it said The file is already fully retrieved; nothing to do. !

Since from wget manual page:
Quote:

If there is a file named 'xyz' in the current directory, Wget will assume that it is the first portion of the remote file, and will ask the server to continue the retrieval from an offset equal to the length of the local file.
which is quite true in my case !

The a attached with ls -la shows hidden files.
and I am perplexed that why gparted was not shown in your home folder even through ls -la !

and the following two outputs of yours are giving me goosebumps now !

Here it is visible that gparted has *somehow* landed in Trash !!
Code:

des@des:~$ locate gparted
/home/des/.local/share/Trash/files/gparted-live-0.6.2-5.iso
/home/des/.local/share/Trash/files/gparted-live-0.6.2-5.iso.part
/home/des/.local/share/Trash/info/gparted-live-0.6.2-5.iso.part.trashinfo
/home/des/.local/share/Trash/info/gparted-live-0.6.2-5.iso.trashinfo
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/gparted.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/icons/gparted.png
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_AU/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_CA/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
des@des:~$

But here that Gparted is not shown, even through ls -la ??????????
Where did it vanish ?
Code:

des@des:~$ cd /home/des/.local/share/Trash/files
des@des:~/.local/share/Trash/files$ ls -la
total 8
drwx------ 2 des des 4096 2010-10-13 16:39 .
drwx------ 5 des des 4096 2010-06-24 05:58 ..
des@des:~/.local/share/Trash/files$

Is the above output complete from your part ?
If yes, then I am helpless here :banghead:

Aquarius_Girl 10-16-2010 12:59 AM

Since this thread has already got 81 replies, I doubt if some other member would be willing to read all the replies here and ...

So all I can suggest you is to create a new thread in the Linux-Newbie section titled:
Quote:

Unable to locate "GParted" after SUCCESSFULLY downloading it through "wget"
and present there the outputs of :
and make sure from now on you present all the outputs in seperate code tags.
To present a readable output, do not club the different outputs in one code tag:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...do=bbcode#code

do all this from :
Code:

des@des:~$
and I have stressed the newbie section for the new thread since most members visit that section, so chances of getting a problem solved are high there.

I hope that this story will helpmake some sense of it: -- My grand Daughters husband loaded UBUNTU for me and set up the dual boot. Had his own disk of gparted. to do the partitions

Later (when back in Mildura I attempted to download a fresh copy of gparted on this computer - well of course my ISP did it's usual trick and dropped out after 15% or so had loaded. I then put the incomplete gparted file in the trash and left the problem for another day. Anyway now I have emptied the trash using the "empty" command. - so that now a locate gparted command results are different as follows.

Code:

des@des:~$ locate gparted
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/gparted.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/icons/gparted.png

/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_CA/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo

and here is the ls -la

Code:

des@des:~$ cd /home/des/.local/share/Trash/files
des@des:~/.local/share/Trash/files$ ls -le
ls: invalid option -- 'e'
Try `ls --help' for more information.

Did you open that link in a new tab and then copied the address from the address bar and then pasted it on terminal with wget -c command ?

I just tested that link and it is working fine here !

Just checking is that the result you wanted - so I'll use that in the new thread - Yes?
Did you read my addition in Post 83 ?

Not sure - but I tried copying your code from an earlier post and that has worked better - as follows:

It is nice if it is working now but for the next time you should always do as per post 85, to avoid any problems.

and for the new thread also do mention at the beginning, the distribution and its version you are using to do all this

and when you present an output of a command it is always better to bold the command executed to make it more readable as follows:
Code:

des@des:~$ wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download?use_mirror=aarnet

des@des:~$

and the output you presented in post 83 is really frightening !

Desdd57 10-16-2010 03:39 AM

When (6 months ago) I first started a download in UBUNTU , I'm sure it asked me where I wanted to store the file. And I have a sneaking suspicion that I instructed it to go to an area that Vista could read as well And that would be NTFS area. I'm searching now for a folder in the windows drives C: & D:

The reason I put them there is because UBUNTU reads may files quite easily from that HD area, But Vista does not read parts of the disk that are partitioned of for Linux.

So I'll have to sut down and go to Windows and see if there is a "Downloads" folder there

Does this sound to you like a possible cause ?

Thanks for all the good advice about bold font etc. I'll do that

Aquarius_Girl 10-16-2010 03:56 AM

I don't think what you have stated will effect wget -c. Because wget -c downloads the file in question only in the directory from where it was launched !

Desdd57 10-16-2010 04:11 AM

Did you read the reason for the Trash getting some of gparted - about half way through post 83 ? ?

It's all scary to me ? What was is that was frightening to you ? :)

Aquarius_Girl 10-16-2010 04:21 AM

yes I read that and also saw that when you again issued locate command you got this:
Code:

des@des:~$ locate gparted
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/gparted.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/icons/gparted.png
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_AU/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_CA/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo

This is frightening since wget is saying that gparted download has been complete but still it is not visible anywhere !

When I issue the locate command on my system I see this and you are also supposed to see something like this if gparted is sitting somewhere on your system.
Code:

anisha@linux-uitj:~> locate gparted
/home/anisha/gparted-live-0.6.3-3.iso
/home/anisha/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso
/home/anisha/tarBalls/gparted-live-0.6.3-3.iso

Good Grief!!!!

Page SEVEN - - -

Seven stands for perfection or completeness. What lessons have I learned from these seven pages, Perseverance, a lot about code, a lot about Forum Manners, that there are always questions but not always answers That I know nothing about the opposite gender That I know even less about LINUX. That life can hold some nice surprises That I have a problem with big feet getting stuck in my mouth That meeting new people and enjoying their camaraderie can be a wonderful treat. That Linux is a great program and demonstrates what people working together can accomplish.

Why don't you read this page : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...do=editoptions

and set the replies to 50 per page and click the save changes button ??? That way you will see only 2 pages like I am seeing now !

...as it is about 120MB in size. Move and rename: 'mv "~/download?use_mirror=aarnet" ~/Downloads/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso', then check if it is an ISO: 'file ~/Downloads/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso'. As to the naming wget doesn't do redirections in filenames so next time you encounter some situation like this you could 'wget -a ~/Downloads/wget.log http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/0.6.4-1/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso/download?use_mirror=aarnet -O ~/Downloads/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso' which basically gets you two things: all actions get appended to the logfile "~/Downloads/wget.log" to read and start troubleshooting with and output redirection to a named file.

Thank you unSpawn for this response - You are however talking to a newbie and all of the code that I have generated has been under the help and guidance of Anishakaul, who has made me work and taught me much. So I have received great help from this forum. I am hoping that Anishakaul will help me understand your comments.

The problem started with not being able to download gparted at all due to my ISP drop-outs So I had to use a library wireless set up (still with my computer). This was apparently successful until I got home and could not find the file. Now if your input solves that riddle (as it seems to from my newbie position) your help will be counted as mammoth. So thank you to the extreme in anticipation.

Anisha, I am postponing the new thread until you have chance to decipher unSpawn's comments and then tell me what I need to do.

I have also sent an email off to SourceForge, to see if they can shed any light

Anyway the email was returned "wrong Address" so the email address in their "contact us" section is incorrect

Not necessary. The size of your "download?use_mirror=aarnet" download is 122947584 bytes which matches the target. Running 'md5sum "download?use_mirror=aarnet";' should return the hash 925620fbfc025abe64500991e2ad73d8. If it does then the ISO download is complete and you can move it to a usable name and location with 'mv "~/download?use_mirror=aarnet" ~/Downloads/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso;'. Single quotes demarcate the commands to use from plain text, just don't forget to use the double quotes where I added them.

Desdd57 10-17-2010 06:27 PM

I've found the file ok by using Ubuntu's search button. Then it got renamed as per post from Spawn. But I can't quite follow the instructions to check if it is an ISO or no.

The result of the command Locate gparted Now is;-

Code:

des@des:~$ locate gparted
/home/des/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/gparted.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/icons/gparted.png
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_AU/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_CA/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/gparted.mo
des@des:~$

Should I put all these files into one folder ? - do they all Need to go onto the CD ? Are all the files here that are needed ?

Run 'file /home/des/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso'. It should return at least "ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data". All good. Now just burn /home/des/gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso using your favorite CD-burning tool.

Aquarius_Girl 10-17-2010 10:44 PM

I hope you are able to follow the above post of unSpawn.

file is the name of a command. This command returns the "type" of the file in question.

e.g.
Code:

anisha@linux-uitj:~> file gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso
gparted-live-0.6.4-1.iso: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data 'GParted-live                  ' (bootable)

You have forgotten the word "shut" there ! Have you ? and you can add that proverb to your signature from here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=editsignature

and then it will appear at bottom of every post of yours and you won't have to write it again and again :)
