Problem: Ubuntu does not recognize CD-ROM drive "D"

You mean that it doesn't recognize your CD drive at all? Or that it isn't assigned a drive letter? If it's the former type [lspci -v] in a terminal window and post the output here. If it is the latter then that the way it works (Linux doesn't use drive letters to identify device/partition position).

You could also try: mount /media/cdrom in a terminal.

Have you clicked on 'Places' which will be at the top of your GUI between 'Applications' and 'System?' You'll either see it there or you may have to pick 'Computer.'
As was mentioned, individual 'drives' are not recognized as such. In Unix, 'everything is a file!' and 'everything' includes your CD drive which will be mounted on the file system which begins at 'root' depicted as the slash and goes down from there. Your CD will probably be mounted on /media/CD but that'll be of little interest to you unless you choose to begin using the command line. I'd be surprised if you don't find it in 'Places.'

It did work. It was in "Places" as you guys said before. As stupid as it could sound, I just introduced the CD ROM in the drive and waited... and waited.. and waited... Now, came a different problem: I need some plug ins. Tomorrow I will look for them... Please, if you guys know where I can find them, let me know...

What sort of plugins? In my experience with Ubuntu of late, if you need one, the system offers to install it. All you need do is agree to do so. Some of them don't take effect until you reboot so keep that in mind before you conclude that things aren't working. By the way, you are soon to be two versions behind. I suggest you update to 9.10 and a month from now move up to 10.4. All these things seem to be easier with each new version of the distribution.
