Can you try to reinstall?

Can you try another kernel?

Surely a reinstall is admitting defeat with any problem?

Does the "fallback" mode allow you to look at logs, are any error messages shown?
Or is this simply a fail to boot successfully?

Have you tried booting from a "live" DVD/USB to check that everything is still basically working?

Is it possible that the monthly update did anything bad to Grub?

sounds like a scenario where proprietary GPU drivers (nvidia, amd/ati) are involved.

detailed write-ups most likely exist for your scenario.
