but nothing changed at all
i got the same result with the same errors

I finally tried :
# rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
and got :

Which distribution are you using? 5, 6, or 7? (though with 2.6.32 for a kernel, I would suspect 5)

For group installs, the yum command needs the group name in quotes (they are usually two words like "KDE Desktop") thus the yum command becomes:

One thing you might do is to check into an upgrade. Part of the problem is that SL seems to be only supplying Gnome or KDE for a desktop. KDE might work, but with the newer releases KDE may have the same requirements as Gnome for accelerated support (it either doesn't run at all, or lots of failures without it).

PS, I could spin up a VM with VGA video and see what happens, but it would be nice to know which release you are using first.

I tried :
#yum groupinstall "KDE Desktop"
and got :

This ought to be working...

I didn't realize this was a Gnome 2 foundation (which doesn't have an issue with acceleration).

The install had some small issues (the display had to pan around the install window to access the "next"/"back" buttons), but nothing too unreasonable.

It is now beginning to look like a module may have gotten corrupted on your system. There should be a /var/log/Xorg.0.log that records what failed (lines around the "(EE)" entries - and lines following them) should show what the error is.

That is beginning to sound like something happened to the disk as the rpm database appears corrupted too.


Are there any hardware errors reported in the logs, or reported by a smartctl -a <device>?

There should be more lines following the (EE) lines that may indicate the module that is failing. Some will be a "don't care" as it also could have a "failing over to...".

The "no screens detected" reason should be in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, something along the lines of "missing module..." or "can't load...".

That is beginning to sound like something happened to the disk as the rpm database appears corrupted too.


Are there any hardware errors reported in the logs, or reported by a smartctl -a <device>?

There should be more lines following the (EE) lines that may indicate the module that is failing. Some will be a "don't care" as it also could have a "failing over to...".

The "no screens detected" reason should be in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, something along the lines of "missing module..." or "can't load...".

On my (very) generic SL 6 install, there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. It is possible this file is bogus (not sure where it would have come from).

BTW, is this a 32 bit system? I ask because I noticed that there is also a reference to /usr/lib/xorg/modules (from the xorg.conf file) which seems to be missing. I'm using a 64 bit VM, and this definitely would not exist (and should not) for 64 bit systems. This points to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as being bogus if the system is 64 bit. The /var/log/xorg.0.log you show is definitely a 64 bit log, and that implies that the system is 64 bit. The conclusion is that the xorg.conf file is bogus.

One other thing that points to a bogus xorg.conf file is that it is attempting to load a radion device (which is ATI manufacture) and you don't have one (being an intel VGA).

To start, try renaming the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to something like /etc/X11/xorg.conf.DONT just to prevent it from being used, then try to start X again.

1) yes , it is 64 bit
2) How can I correct the part trying to load the radion device ?
