second hard drive not recognized (can't mount)

I've got a second FAT32 drive that used to be my backup D: in XP, I've found several posts on how to mount a drive, but I can't even get to that point. I see no evidence that the OS even knows the drive is there, so I don't know how to refer to it in the mount command. Am using RH9 / KDE. I poked around in system disk utilities, etc and don't see the (unmounted) drive anywhere. Both my CD ROMs have mounted fine. Sorry I've got all of 24 hours of linux experience. thks! Jim

What's the device physically on? Primary or Secondary IDE (assuming IDE here) and is it Master or Slave?

Yes, it's IDE. The drive that i just installed RH9 on is "primary 0" (master?), and the FAT32 drive that I'm trying to access is "primary 1" (slave?). The CD ROM drives are on Secondary.

Ok cool, so when you (as root) open a terminal and type:
/sbin/fdisk -l
Do you see hdb listed? If so, further your query:
/sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hdb

And you should be able to see the partitions on that device. You can then mount them at your will:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1

Or wherever you'd like.

thanks so much for your help. I'm almost there. I found the device hdb1 as you described, but apparently it's ntfs, not fat32. From what i've read here, ntfs is supposed to be at least read only supported, but I'm getting a message "mount: fs type ntfs not supported by kernel" . I'm using latest updated kernel for RH9.

Yeah, Red Hat 9.0 comes with a 2.4 kernel I think, and NTFS read is in the 2.6 series. You can either upgrade to the newest Red Hat flavor which is Fedora Core 3, or you can try to upgrade the kernel within Red Hat 9. Kernel Upgrades are a major challenge, but it could also be a good crash course in learning your linux. For simplicity sake, I'd reccomend upgrading to FC3, but even then you may need to modify the kernel. Not sure if NTFS read is enabled by default.

FYI - Just downloaded appropriate rpm from NTFS project website and installed. NTFS now is recognized and I was able to transfer 15GB of data from my old drive. Thanks all for your help.
