Lilo 'L99' Problem

I am having the Lilo problem where I get the cursed L 99 99... when I boot. I have tried booting with the boot disk and running both lilo and liloconfig, but this has had no effect. I then followed some ill gotten advice and deleted the mbr. Now I obviously can't boot the system, and I don't know how to restore the mbr. This system only has Slackware 9.1 installed (no windows), so many of the solutions I have found on the net do not apply. I have also attempted to reinstall and repartition the system several times, but this also has no effect. Any other solutions would be greatly appreciated.

this may sound weird
but i have seen such problems when i tried installing lilo on a MBR on secondary drive
so make ur hdd as primary master and give it a try

lilo some times behaves in a awkward fashion for me
so i prefer grub

regards

The Lilo installation was already on the primary hard drive. I think I deleted the mbr on that drive, tho. How do I restore it?
