I am new here, my last problem (for now) is how to import my Outlook PST into Thunderbird or Evolution.
I downloaded and installed pst-utils

BUT - how do I use this utility?

To be honest, I have never used them, but there are manual pages. And there is no indication that readpst is obsolete.

EDIT: It seems that there used to be a separate readpst package and that this package was obsoleted in favour of the pst-utils package, which contains the readpst tool and other software.

Why do you think so?

AFAIK, Evolution can import from MBOX. For older versions of Thunderbird, there are add-ons ImportExportTools (TB <=60) and ImportExportTools NG (TB 60–72) that also can handle MBOX. I'm not sure about the latest Thunderbird 78.x though.

I will be very happy if I can use a tool to directly import a ST from Outlook directly into Evolution
If there is such an option, please guide me.

I mean you can use readpst to export PST to MBOX, then import that file into Evolution.

This will be a fantastic option for me.
When I tried to install it at command line - it did part of the process and came up with an error that it could not complete the command.

I will be greatful if you give me some clear stps on how to do this

Please pay attention to what berndbausch said above in #2. readpst is not a package. It is a command line tool from the pst-utils package you installed.

readpst is part of pst-utils: apt install pst-utils

Hello my teachers,
I just found out that Evolution has in it an Import PST function, but I tried to run it and it starts showing the progress bar and it goes for hours. I know that my PST has in it over 104K messages (after I compressed it) and it has a size of 6.7GB - is there a limit?

I also found out that pst-utils is already installed on my Ubuntu 20.04, but have no idea on how to try using it?

There are manual pages. I believe that you have to experiment a little, in particular regarding the output format.

To test the Evolution import function, and also the readpst tool, I would use Outlook to first cut the PST file down to several smaller PST files. It's not inconceivable that a 6G file is beyond the capabilities of Evolution and/or the PC. For example, you may have problems with RAM, swap space or temporary filesystem space that lead to slow or never completing operation.

Once again, many thanks for your feedback.
1) The link to the documentation , in the Linux section points mainly to error page.
2) Good news, I sorted out my problem... ALL my 140K records have been imported OK.

Here is what the problem was
1) I setup the initial account as IMAP
2) ON my Windows 10 desktop, on my mobile phone, on my tablet - I prefer POP3

So, becasue - Evolution had it as IMAP... as records were imported - it was attempting to update the Gmail server, it has been seen by the system as a new email message coming into the Inbox, what happend as a result is:

1) All my other devices - Desktop, phone tablet were flooded with "New" messages...
2) At times, my SUrface 3 Pro is loosing Internet connection, Evolution reports a critical error and the Import program crashes...

Today, I picked up the problem, changed the email account in Evolution to POP3 instead of IMAP. The IMprt program ran without a problem for about 5 hours and finished it all OK.

While doing this , I realized that actually - the current version of Evolution has the built-in Import PST program, there is no need to find any other utilities to do the job. It is all there.

Now, How do I publish all my findings to the group? IT may help some other new person to save all the time I wasted on this...

It's easy assuming you have already exported your pst eg: pst_archive.pst

Install pst-utils: sudo apt-get install pst-utils (or from repository)
In Thunderbird: install the addon: ImportExportTools NG
Create a folder anywhere and copy pst_archive.pst it: eg: pst_folder
Create an export folder within pst_folder: eg: export_folder
in pst_folder (containing 2 items: the pst and the sub-dir export_folder) run the following command: readpst -M -b -e -o export_folder pst_archive.pst
In Thunderbird create a local sub-folder at the bottom (below the imap accounts such as gmail hotmail etc) called eg: Archive_Local
Right click Archive_Local and select ImportExportTools NG > Import all messages from a directory > also from its subdirectories
navigate to and select the export_folder dir to import.
