How to insert the character '=' inside VI


I was trying to write a SQL using VI.
When I wanted to add the where clause and i am pressing the '=' nothing is happening.
Is there something i need to do to insert this '='.

in insert mode = means = so it should work. Probably you missed something....

Thanks when i was trying to edit it was probably not in the insert mode.
I tried now and it is working.
