Managed to get an upgraded kernel configured and running on my computer. Have many problems. Will work one at a time.
I had vfat support on the old kernel (Red Hat Linux V7.0, kernel 2.2). I was able to load and access my vfat floppy drive and transfer files from the floppy to my HD. Can't do it now. What do I need to do to get vfat support working?

Compile the kernel again and configure it to support vfat file system.

Question on recompile

Okay, I understand. I will have to recompile the kernel. I finally know how to do this.
Question: Does this mean that I have to go through the entire configuration routine, answering all those questions?Or is there a way to just answer the one question on vfat support?

If you use
Code:
make menuconfig
or
Code:
make xconfig
then you can just just to the specific question you want.

If you're dual-booting, then you might want to:
-Boot from the old kernel that supports vfat.
-Use make xconfig (presuming you're running x).
-Save the configuration files to the Windows Partition.

I've got a 'folder' on my Win desktop that contains all files I need to keep for Linux - just incase I cock up bigtime!

Since the kernel config files are not too big, if you make any changes you might want to keep a record of them.
