So I have an Acer Aspire One. A nice 3-week old, shiny but broke in, netbook. I HAD Windows XP and Ubuntu. At this point, Ethernet was working properly. So I decided to try Slackware, but realized that I did NOT like KDE as my GUI. So, back to good ol' Ubuntu. But now my Ethernet is not working on either OS.
So I figured that I should go thru a makeshift process of elimination.
Both OSes [winxp and ubuntu) support my Ethernet and mostly everything else out-of box. So no problem there. And also, Win XP and Linux ~ have always been on unaltered, seperate partitions. So, there goes that idea.
Making sure it wasn't a driver problem, I went ahead and installed and reinstalled the drivers on Linux and M$ just to make sure. Issue remained.
Then I checked my router. As far as I can TELL, it seems to be in good working order. I mean, I'm using it now (wirelessly).
Lastly, out of pure desperation, I looked at the wire and ports themselves. They look fine. Brand new. Ethernet cord is new and fully functional. Ethernet port on computer aesthetically well. Same on router. I mean, I have been using this setup for about three weeks no prob. Now it's come to a screeching halt. the ONLY thing I can reason is a failure of the physical hardware. Which is presumeably not likely. It's a very new computer.
I simply must be overlooking something. I need your guys' input. Im very frustrated. Thanks LQ.
EDIT: an lspci command shows the ethernet is recognized. if it helps, its an Attansic Atheros AR PCIE fast ethernet controller
EDIT: System Information for Windows also recognizes the ethernet.

I checked the ethernet port on the computer a little closer and can confirm it is working (green and orange LED's light up.)
The routers' ports are also confirmed. The lights on it indicate a Ethernet is set up.
Also, this same configuration worked for 3 WEEKS. After reinstalling Ubuntu after a short bout with Slackware everything has gone to crap. Both the OEM Windows and Ubuntu Karmic are becoming increasingly unstable...

Its physically connected to the point that the ethernet LEDs are flickering. And Its connected to the router, the ethernet LED is lit up. I even tried removing the router all together and simply insert the ethernet cord directly from the modem.
So all external signs point to an active connection.
SIW still shows Disconnected.
(SIW is a third-party program thats alot better than what Windows comes with)

Is it possible that an OS could recognize a device without being connected correctly?
And, how could a connection be broken if I've never opened the computer, or even pulled extraordinarily hard on the port?
Is it possible that when installing an OS, somehow it can corrupt the firmware for the device?
Is it possible that the PC was not well put together in the first place?
Should I contact Acer? They don't like Linux being on the same computer as their OEM Windows. They probably won't help me.

This seems so weird to me. Like I said, same version of Ubuntu Out-of-box was working weeks ago. And, the Windows partition has worked since I got the PC. Tried Slackware, only formattiong the partition Ubuntu was on. Didn't like so hot, so put Ubuntu back on. BAM! No Ethernet

Basic problem, from this thread's point of view, is that no one who knows the answer - which might be obvious - is likely to intervene in this thread now. It is probably a good idea to repost in the networking section and make the point that it does not work on both Windows and Linux, post ifconfig -a and the output of lspci, and anything else they suggest in the stickies at the top of the forum.
All I can think is that - as you have been stressing - it does not work on both operating systems. So does this imply that it is either a hardware failure, or a router configuration failure? (Would not know about firmware.) So how about putting a Ubuntu, say, live CD in the drive and rebooting? If that does not get the internet we seem to have established the problem is hardware or router configuration. (Assuming like mine your router is configured using its external web site.)
edit: You could loose the router to eliminate that possibility, like you did before.
