To answer you question from another thread to keep from hijacking it anymore than what has already been done.
Code:
I really do not want to add to this - but my Ubuntu 16 has not "grub2".
I am not sure I want to make more of a mess in my stuff by "loading grub2" but when I do "edit" initial menu it show "grub2
grub2 refers to the grub bootloader that most distros currently use versus grub-legacy that was just called grub at the time and is no longer used by most distros. The configuration files for grub2 are in /etc/grub.d and the /etc/default/grub. The /boot/grub is the directory that most debian/ubuntu based distros put the the grub2 boot files that are needed for booting. Fedora based distros put these same grub2 files in /boot/grub2. To add even more confusion depending on the distro and if you booting a live iso or a distro off the hard drive the grub.cfg that is used for booting can be in one of several places:
/boot/grub/grub.cfg, /boot/grub2/grub.cfg, /boot/efi/EFI/<distro name>/grub.cfg, /EFI/<distro name>/grub.cfg and maybe /boot/grub.cfg in a few special circumstances.

OK, I got it.
"system CMOS " is using UEFI/ EFI
"points " to something "EFI"
this "EFI" file "points' to /default/grub
this default grub build / add "prefix" for "grub.cfg"

somehow I end up in "grub2.02 beta" app ( file called "ubuntu") and can select OS to boot.

Last points - the "system setup " identifies device #1 to use to boot as "ubuntu" - twice !

It runs on power up - before all the above can take places - so where does the name "ubuntu ' come from ?
The "bash shell like" is called grub2 but it is nowhere named as such - "find" will not find it.
Funnies part is - when "grub" fails this "bash shell like" application is impossible to use - unless one has another computer ti run the "help" file.

I wonder if somebody can put all this into IBM style paper flowchart.
I need a vacation.
