cros in top right corner is gone and can't move screens anymore

Have been working with Linux Mint for a while but have little to no understanding of it. When I started the pc this morning it starts with the documents window opened. I can't close it with the cross in the top right corner (the cross is missing) but can select close window. I can't move windows anymore . The same problem occurs with all the programs I run. Couldn't find any info on this problem anywhere. Thanks.

Which graphical environment are you using? (KDE,GNOME,Mate, etc)

It sounds to me like some setting has caused it or a more serious problem. I'm leaning towards the former.

a quick check, find the desktop config file, change its name so you'll still have it, log out log in, it creates a new config will all of its default settings. if you're still having issues with it then you'll need to look deeper.

can't rename file

I could find several files called gnome desktop confi.svg and .npg but can't change the name because of lack of authorisation.
Is deleting them an option?

thanks

create a new user (surely mint has a gui for that) and log into it.
if everything is ok now, then at least you know you must have messed up somewhere...

fwiw, it sounds like your window manager isn't starting up as supposed, but without further investigation this is useless information.

edit:
oops, permission problems?
please open a terminal and enter this command:
Code:
whoami
have you ever logged in as root?

Thanks for the info.
I've never logged in as root (as far as I know). When I wish to make another user it says only root can add a new user.
whoami gives me my user name but nothing else happens.
