Can't turn on wireless / Fn+F11 not working, after issues with Gnome

I think I must have accidentally uninstalled something I shouldn't have, so that I got an error saying something like:
"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon... (etc etc)...The name org.gnome.SettingsDaemon was not provided by any .service files", and could only work through the terminal, but had desktop icons and internet still working fine, although the panel was gone.

I eventually fixed the error by installing gnome-control-center and gnome-panel.
However, since then I have not been able to turn wireless on anymore, as the Fn key seemed to have stopped working for both sound volume and wifi only. I have re-configured it for the sound controls, but the most important one, the wireless (Fn+F11), still doesn't work.
I think (or hope) that the problem is in the key's configuration, but haven't found any way to turn wifi on through the terminal to test it.

Oh, and I'm using Caixa Mágica, which is based on Mandriva.

EDIT: I tried running Ubuntu from the CD, and the wifi / Fn+F11 all seems to work on it, but I can only access the internet when the laptop is right next to the router.
