Can't launch installed programs

For those of you helping me with the Libreoffice install I took someone's advice in another forum and supposedly installed it. Here is the terminal action:

Quote:
gregg@LG:~/Desktop$ cd LibreOffice_4.2.3.3_Linux_x86_deb/DEBS/
gregg@LG:~/Desktop/LibreOffice_4.2.3.3_Linux_x86_deb/DEBS$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

And Libreoffice shows up in the Applications Menu but it won't launch. Nor does it when I right click on a file and choose 'open with Libreoffice..."

The other program is Sigil. I installed that from a debian file using Gdebi installer. In fact I installed it twice because it didn't open the first time.

So yeah, same thing: it's in the applications menu but it won't launch.

And an unrelated note: I've been getting red lines and stuff sometimes as I type in here. Just like three or four squiggly red horizontal lines (not the spell checker).

Thanks.

Try starting Libreoffice from the command line and post any error messages that appear in the terminal here, being sure to surround them with "Code" tags which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the "compose post" window.

If you are not sure what the command is, run

Code:
ls /usr/bin/libreo*
On my system, libreoffice suffices.

First, try making sure you've got the right packages for it to work via the gdm.
Quote:
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-gtk libreoffice-style-tango
If it's still not working, run the following to check it is indeed installed. I wonder if somewhere along the line you've gotten yourself a tad confused.

Quote:
dpkg-query -l | grep "libre"
Or to restart.
Quote:
dpkg -r libreoffice
rm -r /home/gregg/Desktop/LibreOffice*
wget http://donate.libreoffice.org/home/d...x86_deb.tar.gz # if you really insist on using dpkg
sudo dpkg -i <libreoffice-filename>.deb
sudo apt-get -f install # to resolve dependancies
One of your posts in your prior thread you post a quote tag showing you tried to install the deb file with apt-get; use dpkg for installing files you download yourself - general rule of thumb: apt = repos, dpkg = manual.

Thanks Frank. I ran libreoffice and got this:

Code:
gregg@LG:~/Desktop$ libreoffice
The program 'libreoffice' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-common
And the guy who was helping me insisted that it was installed. Oh well. So now I can get the USC version from the terminal with that command? (I'll probably get it from the USC, though. I'm getting a little leery of using the terminal.)

And so you use the "code" feature when you mention any kind of computer lingo?

Now I'm going to have to figure out how to remove that attempt at installing LO (and also the Sigil) so I don't have any conflicts when I install the new ones.

Thanks Hb. I think both LO and Sigil were not installed. If you'll see my response to Frank Bell you'll see the LO info. And here's what I got when I put Sigil in the terminal:

Code:
gregg@LG:~/Desktop$ sigil
/usr/local/share/sigil/sigil: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I'm really thinking I want to get a newer version of Sigil anyway, so now my concern is to get rid of the LO and Sigil that are in there now, so I don't have any conflicts when I install the new versions.

Thanks for all the commands. I appreciate them and your effort, but I think what I got with just entering the names. (Sorry for switching gears on you.)

Hey guys. Think I'm going to call this thread solved because it really will be a new topic (getting rid of improperly installed programs). (I'd appreciate it if you could check that one out too if you can. Thanks!)
