Can't install yum on fedora 8 anyone had the same problem and can share solution?

Used the following procedure I found all over the internet:

As root,
cd ~
mkdir yum
cd yum
wget .../yum/download/2.0/yum-2.0.7.tar.gz
tar -xvzf yum-2.0.7.tar.gz
cd yum-2.0.7
./configure
make
make install

Get the following errors:

/bin/sh: line 2: msgmerge: command not found
msgmerge -v of cs failed
/bin/sh: line 2: msgmerge: command not found
msgmerge -v of es failed
/bin/sh: line 2: msgmerge: command not found
msgmerge -v of ru failed
/bin/sh: line 2: msgmerge: command not found
msgmerge -v of uk failed
msgfmt --statistics --verbose -o cs.mo cs.po
make[1]: msgfmt: Command not found
make[1]: *** [cs.mo] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/yum/yum-2.0.7/po'
make: *** [all] Error 2

Tried different rpm's and version, even the latest yum 3.2.19 and still can't get it installed.

Anyone had the same problem and got a solution?

It would be so much better if yum can as standard on fedora cores!

Yum does come standard on Fedora, possibly you got overzealous during install and deselected a bunch of packages? The 2 missing programs, msgmerge and msgfmt, are both part of the gettext package, which should also be installed by default.

To get yum on your system, no need to compile it. Go to a Fedora 8 mirror site, manually download, and install with rpm.

It's on a VDS, plesk 8 fedora 8, which doesn't have yum installed by default.

Trying to install subversion on fedora 8 but too many dependancies and a nightmare to setup. I've read subversion comes standard on fed distros and can easily be setup with yum.

Getting yum now is a nightmare, a double blow.

Anyone know any step by step guides to get yum working on fedora 8 or rpm subversion? Googling hasn't helped so far.

If I get this sorted I will post the solution if it's not already out there or some one helps posting it to me.
