Can't connect to an ad-hoc network in Ubuntu 12.10

I have created an ad-hoc network on a laptop running Windows, and wish to connect to the n/w from my Ubuntu 12.10 system (on a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop). I am able to see the n/w name on Ubuntu, but when I click on it, a message pops up saying
Quote:
"Wireless network disconnected - you are now offline"
Also, when I want to open "Network Connections", it always crashes.
