can't login to ssh server--error: write failed broken pipe

Hi everybody,

I hope you can help me with my problem and forgive me if my english may sound
a little bit weird, it's not my primary language

The Problem:

I have a linux home server with ssh runnig on it, everything worked fine until
I created a chrooted user for a friend, so that he can sftp to it and upload files. The chrooted user can connect to the server perfectly fine, but other users (not chrooted) can't login anymore and get the error:

Write failed: Broken pipe

Does anybody know what to do?

Thanks in advance

Hi daforce,

I have only theroical understanding of chroot process, but I think you may have messed a little your OS or at least the login.

Questions:
Which distro do you use?
can you login with a privileged user?

If you can login and get in admin mode (sudo or su) you may want to look at /var/log/messages file and look for the word 'login' or the user name(s) that have that error.

Broken pipe means (grosso modo) that the connection was closed unexpectedly but there are many causes

I think i messed up my system by blindly using apt-get upgrade.
My MYSQL server was also not working anymore.
Lesson learned. Will install from scratch.

Thx for trying to help me
