can't install fedora, Kbuntu ?? disk error

I'm trying to install Kbuntu on an old machine AMDK6 II 400 with an old bios and I get the error Disk error 01, AX = 425B,9F as soon as I boot from the latest cd. I get a similar error with Fedora. The install disks work fine in other computers so they are not the problem. The bios is acer ax59pro release 2 1998 and I think this may be the problem. Can't find a bios upgrade to flash. Can anyone suggest a version of linux that might work with this older bios.

TIA

Did you try lowering the PIO mode for the CDROM?
On many of my oldr machines I have to do this to get the CD to read correctly.

Also, take as much off of Auto as possible. The BIOS will the "take over" handleing alot of settings which will require less pnp activity from the install.

If that doesen't help you out I suggest you try out Vectorlinux. It's good on older machines.

If you want the 'full package' i suggest you try SuSe.
