can't get past log in screen

Started up this morning got to log in screen and noticed splash screen was different when tried to log in screen goes blank pointer changes to x then back to log in. Can't log in as root on KDE. logged into failsafe started kde from terminal added another user, new user can log in normally. How can I get back into my other user profile. I checked system logs and found these errors: session opened for user "xxxx" by (uid=0)
can't update authorization file in home dir /home/"xxxx"
cannot create sesion log file .xsession-errors: permission denied
session closed for user "xxxxx"
I can open my old profiles files from the new user but I would prefer to fix this the right way any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Log in as "root", go to your /home/xxx user home directory, and do an "ls -la .xsession-errors".

Assuming user "xxx" and group "users", you can change the owner as follows:

chown xxx:users .xsession-errors

Hopefully, that'll fix it for you.

tryed that and received no such directory or file exists. If I go into failsafe I can command startkde and get that to work but shell outputs font error message as it opens. If I log in as my new user at splash kde opens normally. Other thing I noticed is that the session manager at splash screen no longer lists gnome.

OK, then maybe the problem is actually with your .xinitrc. Here are a few links:
