Can't figure out how to set monitor resolution

Iv'e been reading everything I could find for a week now and can't figure out how to get the resolution to 1024 x 768. Hope some one can help. I just installed mint 9. Went to an older distro because of the age of the machine. And yes, I have the dreaded on board sis 661 graphics. It looks like the drivers are installed but the vesa driver is being used. Using an acer flat monitor.

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 800 x 600, maximum 960 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   960x600 60.0
   960x540 60.0
   800x600 60.0* 56.0
   768x576 60.0
   720x576 60.0
   856x480 60.0
   800x480 60.0
   720x480 61.0
   640x480 60.0
   400x300 60.0
   320x240 61.0

Have you thought of using a distro that IS supported
mint 9 is 6 versions out of date

Try Debian stable
http://www.debian.org/distrib/
or
CentOS 6.4 and 5.9
http://mirrors.arsc.edu/centos/6.4/isos/
I have 6.4 running just fine on a 12 year old computer
5.9 might not be needed

with the vesa driver on mint 9
600 x 800 is about the best you will get
and might be the max if it is an older CRT monitor

Hi john. I removed mint and installed debian 7 with still the same problem. I found a post after hours of looking that worked for me. Many thanks to the auther.

I created an xorg.conf file then copied it into my /etc/x11 dir and rebooted. It worked like a charm. I don't know what other linux flavours it'll work for. Hope this may help others.
