Can't create folder in file system using file browser

hi
I am using Ubuntu 8.10. Can only create folders in my home folder, not in other folders, say in /var/www using FileBrowser. Does it have to do with folder permissions which I have to enable or do I have to use a command line or FTP client to get this done.

#sudo mkdir /abc

<your passwd>

will create a new folder /abc

#sudo chown <your username> /abc

will let /abc to be used freely by user

You can't do anything (generally) that's system related, without using the "root" account. In Ubuntu that's provided by Sudo. It's designed to protect you from messing up your system.

Using Sudo in the command line, as suggested by Amani, above, is the easiest way to achieve what you want. You can also activate Nautilus (file manager) with Sudo permissions using gksudo. I'm pretty much a Linux beginner but I believe running:

gksudo nautilus

...will give you the file manager with Sudo permissions.
