Well, of course, anything beyond "the usual
magazines, peep-shows or their digital equivalent" is
never "a smart thing to do with a digital computer."
VPN services are very handy for giving you strong security within your coffee shop: the information is securely encrypted and sent far-away before being released. If you ensure that
all of your traffic goes through the tunnel, there's nothing for the spy who's sipping lattes over there on the table by the window to steal from you.
But always remember that all your traffic
does emerge from the tunnel someplace ... and that it is undoubtedly true that records are being kept. Every country has laws and therefore law-enforcement, and it so happens that the exit-portal of a public VPN service is an excellent "concentrator" for surveillance purposes. You can't expect them
not to keep records: anywhere you go, there are laws providing for "search and seizure." They could be subpoenaed, and they must exercise "due diligence" if only to protect
their asses. (They probably aren't allowed to intercept and to record content, but they can be obliged to furnish metadata.) Enjoy your computer – safeguard your privacy – and stay on the good side of the law. Nothing to it ...
