Your VM is working. You should be able to find some guides on the internet on using netcat for penetration testing. I am not familiar with BurpSuite and so can not offer any more help.
Thanks, I appreciate all your help!

Hi maddmoney,

For netcat try :

Code:
$ nc -v google.com 80
found 0 associations
found 1 connections:
     1:	flags=82<CONNECTED,PREFERRED>
	outif en0
	src 192.168.1.65 port 64966
	dst 172.217.19.110 port 80
	rank info not available
	TCP aux info available

Connection to google.com port 80 [tcp/http] succeeded!
GET / HTTP/1.1

HTTP/1.1 200 OK

P3P: CP="This is not a P3P policy! See g.co/p3phelp for more info."

..........
After you write GET / HTTP/1.1 hit enter 2 times .

Regarding Burp , make sure you turn off the intercept off, burp is starting with Intercept enabled by default. ( It is in Proxy -> Intercept ). I suppose you are using burp 1 .
