'Uninstalling' programs

Hi,

I download ProFTPd from the net as a source and compiled, and installed it - I didn't use the rpm version. My question is, does Linux use a similar thing to windows like a registry where all programs are recorded?

I am now using ncFTPd as my FTP server and would like to remove Proftpd from my system. Is there an easy procedure to do this?

Thanks,
keymoo

Thanks - what if I've deleted the source directory? Am I screwed?

It turns out that I hadn't deleted the source directory, and I ran the command and got this message:
make: *** No rule to make target 'uninstall'. Stop.
