configured samba and is accessing win2k box lovely, but my win2k SP2 machine only sees the RH 7.1 box in network places and cannot see any diectories just says cannot access ?????
I thought the linux side of connecting these two os's was the hard bit !

yeah, in your smb.conf file you want to set it so that when root or a specific user logs in the directory that the start out in it "/" and possibly set it to "browsable = yes"

i would definitely say smb.conf. take a look at the man pages for samba and some things on linuxdoc.org, they might be able to point you in a better direction than i.
just wondering, but do you have an account for the user logged on to the win2k machine set in the linux machine? If you don't, use the smbpasswd program (located in /usr/local/samba/bin) to re-enter username/password or just to enter a new user. While in the samba/bin directory, type the following to change for username (in this example):
./smbpasswd -a username
The first time a user is added, the program will output an error saying that the encrypted password database does not exist. Don't worry, it will then create the database for you and you should have access.
