win xp won't login to samba but win 2k works great
I have set up a public directory on my samba server with the following configuration:
[public]
path = /home/shared
public = yes
only guest = yes
writable = yes
printable = no
I have set up no additional shares or users.
when I try to access the samba directory through network places in win2k I get a username and password prompt. I simply hit the ok button without typing anything in and I have full access to the samba directory. This is exactly what I want.
However, when I try to access through netowork places in XP i get a username and password prompt but the OK button is dimmed until I type something in for the username. But no matter what I try for the username I can't get it to login. I really don't want it to need a login or password.

Huh?!?! You mean XP Home doesn't have an NT domain login client?!? That's ridiculous! Even Win9x/ME is capable of logging on to an NT domain... But then again I wouldn't know, because I never actually used XP Home.
In any case... With XP it's a bit trickier. Look in your SAMBA docs directory, there should be some registry patches for Windoze XP. Apply them, restart XP and see if that helps.
Thanks for the reply, I have windows xp professional. I am using a workgroup so I don't need to worry about domains. I doubt I need to change anything in the config file because it works great in win2K.
My real problem is that I windows XP won't allow me to login with a blank user name. What a crock!
1) Go to Start>Run and type gpedit.msc then hit enter.
2) Next go to "Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security
Settings\Local Policies\Security Options"
3) Now look for the "Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure cahnnel data"
Double-click on it and select "disable" then hit apply then ok.
4) Now look for the "Domain member: Digitally sign secure cahnnel data (when possible)"
Double-click on it and select "disable" then hit apply then ok.
