vsftpd isn't happy when ran by xinetd

I like to keep things simple and run vsftpd along with my sshd and mail program under xinetd rather than standalone but when vsftpd is ran with xinetd it just drops all connections to it. If I run vsftpd standalone ( /usr/sbin/vsftpd) and add a line in the /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf listen=YES then it works just fine so I have come to the conclusion that xinetd doesn't like running vsftpd <-- metaphor. No idea where to start troubleshooting the difference of how vsftpd runs when under xinetd when compared to it running by itself. What would cause an issue like this? I've checked the xinetd/vsftpd config and everything looks fine. I can post that if needed.

Update. Seams people outside my lan are having trouble staying connected. It timesout when they refresh the directory and it's not showing the folders/files I have in /home/ftp/. If I goto my router config and add my pc to the DMZ then they don't timeout yet they still don't see any files/folders when connected. Just doesn't make sense. I have port 20-21 forwarded to my lan pc so why does putting it on the DMZ affect it in such a way? Is there a port or port range I'm forgetting?
