Hi,

I have a cable modem in my apartment that comes in in my roommate's room. He has a Linksys router (i can get the exact model # if needed) out there that splits the connection to his computer and to my room. In my room I have a Netgear RP614 router that I'm using to split the connection between my Mac and my Linux computer.

Here the basic layout of the network:


WWW --> Cable Modem --> Linksys Router --> Netgear Router --> Linux Comp.


I want the Linux machine to be a web/ftp server so as far as I know I need it to get it's DHCP information from the Linksys router (the one at the root of the network) so that dynamic DNS will work. If I have my Netgear router set up so that it has the cable coming from the Linksys router coming into it's in port and have DHCP turned on my Mac and Linux machines both see it, get their IP addresses from it, and access the internet perfectly. The problem with this is that then I can't set up dynamic dns on my Linux machine if it is not getting it's IP from the first router in the chain. (from what I know anyway)

If I turn DHCP off on my Netgear router and put the ethernet cable form the Linksys into one of it's regular ports my Mac see's the Linksys router and gets it's IP from it, but the Linux computer doesn't. I was the Netgear to simply act as a switch and allow the Linksys to be the router for the entire network.

I am running Slackware 10 on my Linux machine and have it set it use DHCP for networking (which is what my Mac is set to also).

What can I do to get the Linux machine to see the Linksys router? Should I change the configuration of either of the routers?

So you have the Linksys going to one of the Netgears switch ports, and the Mac, and the Linux computer also in a switch port on the Netgear?


Do the link lights show up on the switch where the Linux pc is plugged into the Netgear?

Also what if you try to setup the Linux pc with a static IP that would be on the same subnet that the other computers are on?
