can't ftp from external source

I can't ftp my server from an external source but, I can from my internal network. I can ping the server from an external source but when I try to ftp in as any type of user I get an error message something like, "Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access this folder". I tried temporarily disabling the firewall but that didn't work either. Any ideas?

RedHat 8.0

Oops, I should have included that. There are only two computers in my network (including the server). 1 XP Pro & 1 Redhat 8.0 I'm not using a router or switch, the internet connection comes directly into the linux box via usb cable modem and routes to my XP Pro box via 10/100 nic's. It seems to be routing the internet connection beautifully and the file server part is working fine. I'm running in GUI (kde & gnome).

Thanx for the help.
