XSane not registering scanner in Mint18 - after doing so OK in 17.3

Have just "upgraded?" to Mint18 from 17.3 (as a "have to have the latest" person I just had to go to 16.04 rather than 14.04 - which is working fine - and with the same 4.4ish kernel ) but to my surprise neither of the scanner apps XSane (a very good app) or Simple Scan will register/detect my wifi EpsonTX-710W's scanner function - both showing "No scanner detected" - yet XSane worked/isworking fine on the identical hardware in 17.3.

Have tried all the usual tricks: turning the printer/scanner off and on again (tedious but necessary in 17.3 when going from "scanning" to "printing" ), rebooting the wifi router/modem, restarting the OS - without any success. Always the same "No scanner detected". But scanning with XSane is still working OK/normally in the 17.3 install!
Yet the printer function itself is working fine in Mint18 - even to the point of now showing the ink levels (which it hasn't ever done before) and allowing the initiation of the head-cleaning process.
So the largest part of the printer/scanner's communication bizzo seems to be working OK - yet for some reason it won't now communicate with the scanner function.

Has there been some change in the networking protocols etc etc between Mints 17.3 and 18 - ie between Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04??
Or would a kernel upgrade help? - that can often seem to change functionality in a rather random fashion .

TIA
Paul W

I don't know if it will help, but you can give simple-scan a try instead of Xsane

No - as I said: Simple Scan gives exactly the same result - "No Scanner Detected" or "No Devices Found" or somesuch.
And yet everything is still working fine (or as well as it ever has ) in the 17.3 install on the same box
