I'm currently using Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon Edition, although the problem occurred also on 18.0 and 18.1.
Nemo file manager crushes unexpectedly while I'm browsing through my files. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen frequently making Nemo unusable then. Sometimes it happens when I'm backing up large files to a portable drive but sometimes it happens when I'm just looking in my file system with no other large software running in the background.
I would appreciate any help on this issue.
All the best,
georap
P.S.I'm including my system information for your help.

I did what you said in your reply (almost, and I will explain below) and the terminal output was the following:
Code:
Initializing nemo-dropbox 3.4.0
Nemo-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: mkdir failed on directory /var/run/samba/msg.lock: Permission denied
net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.
You said to "reproduce the issue." But as I said in my first post, Nemo crashes unexpectedly so I cannot really reproduce the issue until I wait for Nemo to start crashing again.
Finally, I don't understand what the symbol "[/*]" means in your reply but I hope that's not important.
please, document every step (commands issued, output received).
i cannot help you to reproduce the problematic behavior, you will have to figure that out yourself and maybe learn something along the way.
it's called troubleshooting.
alternatively, you could also look in logs (journalctl? Xorg log?).
the above message looks problematic, but not like an actual crash.
Hehe, I'm sorry but although I've worked with Linux for some years now, I'm still a newbie when it comes to troubleshooting via the CLI.
What I did, following you advice, was to use, through the GUI, the System Monitor to kill the "nemo-desktop" and then type "nemo" in the terminal. No other process was associated with the nemo. I did "kill" and "end" the "nemo-desktop" in a separate fashion and then restart the nemo. The output that I posted was the same for both cases.
The "crash" that I'm trying to explain is that nemo just turns off (closes down). And I need to open it again.
I looked into the "journalctl" command. I turned on my PC four hours ago and since then the log has generated approx. 2300 entries. I skimmed them and although there were some failures or troubles (coloured with red in the "Guake" terminal which I use) nothing mentioned Nemo. But again today I did not work extensively with the file manager and did not have any problem.
I understand what you say, however. I need to learn a lot if I truly want to go around a linux environment. However, I need to go back to school (meaning study the bash by myself) and I'm too old for this.
The next time that Nemo crashes I will look into the "journalctl" and try to find something meaningful.
The next time that Nemo crashes I will look into the "journalctl" and try to find something meaningful.
it should have been in the journal already.
but maybe you can find this:
Code:
Initializing nemo-dropbox 3.4.0
Nemo-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: mkdir failed on directory /var/run/samba/msg.lock: Permission denied
net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.
and confirm, through timestamps, that this is really what's causing the crash.
i'm befuddled that it would make the program to crash, but since this is the only meaningful output we have, we have to work with it.
the message is fairly clear.
i am no expert with samba, so i cannot help much further.
are you actually using samba (network filesystem sharing compatible with windows, afaik)?
I have a similar problem: no crashes but when I open a nemo file manager window from the CLI (bash) and then navigate e.g. to the parent directory, I get the following message:
<quote>
Nemo-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: mkdir failed on directory /var/run/samba/msg.lock: Permission denied
net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.
</quote>
But I don't (want to) use samba. Why does nemo call 'net userhare info' ? I have not enabled any sharing...
I think there are some samba modules missing.
$ sudo samba-tool user list
ldb: unable to stat module /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba/ldb : No such file or directory
ldb: unable to stat module /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba/ldb : No such file or directory
ERROR(ldb): uncaught exception - ldb_search: invalid basedn '(null)'
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/samba/netcmd/__init__.py", line 175, in _run
return self.run(*args, **kwargs)
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/samba/netcmd/user.py", line 292, in run
attrs=["samaccountname"])
But why should I install those if I don't use samba? And why should I enable user sharing if I don't want any user sharing?
in any case, the op of this thread never really provided enough info and in retrospect i doubt the crashes had anything to do with that message (note, it's just a message, a warning maybe, not an actual error).

OK, it is just a warning. But why is there no way to disable sharing in the preferences?
I wonder why I cannot remove 'Network' from the side bar. Why is this not allowed? (BTW: the same is true for 'Home', 'Desktop' and 'Trash')
Maybe I will download the sources and see if I can change this. ;-)
Yep, I have the same issue.. I started nemo from the command line and here is what happens when I copy a file from one folder to another:
[turgut@tklaptop ~]$ nemo
