You have to be root to run iwconfig. A normal user isn't allowed to access hardware.

I don't have an Ubuntu box around, but if I remember right, it should be in the menu system somewhere. There has to be a System menu or something like that that allows you to configure your network cards.

Ah, too bad that your school is so closed-minded, but many of them are. You're very welcome for the help and don't worry about closing this thread since LQ doesn't close threads unless they violate the terms of the site.
