understand that mac address is the same as bssid, but config. wireless asks for both?
when i try to configure my wireless on my laptop, it asks for a mac address, and a bssid. should i put in the same numbers? it also ask,s for a clone mac address, i dont know what that is. could someone let me know? thank you for your time.

Welcome to LQ!
You really shouldn't need any mac addresses to configure your wireless. Can you fill us in on some details about what distro you're using and how you're trying to configure your wireless card? |
i dont know what a distro is, i loaded ubuntu 10.10 netbook final

[QUOTE]my wireless shows the 2wire im supposed to connect to wirelessly but when i try, it keeps asking me for my wep key[/QUOTE
You're using a horribly insecure encryption method. You really shouldn't be using WEP if you are concerned about security. While it isn't likely that this is a driver problem, it would be helpful to know what wireless hardware you've got. If you can open a console and run lspci, there should be an entry labeled "Network Controller" and that will hopefully have the wireless card info, particularly the chipset. Quote:

Are you using network manager to try and configure the wireless card or are you using something else? Quote:

here is everything i,ve got attached. thank you.

A few things:
- The lshw output is useless since you didn't drill down to the wireless card. All that is showing is the top level hardware controllers -lspci isn't helping. What it is showing is this: Code:
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB PRO/100 VE (MOB) Ethernet Controller (rev 83) Your wireless scan: Code:
rokalotjeff@rokalotjeff-lap:~$ sudo iwlist eth1 scan So lets start from the beginning here. what is the ESSID of your access point, and what does the output of iwconfig eth1 look like? By the way, you can just post the output in your post, no need to make an attachment. Just copy/paste what you want to post and then surround it with the CODE or QUOTE tags. |
rokalotjeff@rokalotjeff-lap:~$ iwconfig eth1

Code:
iwconfig eth1 essid 2WIRE115 Code:
ifup eth1 By the way, you should be able to enter the ESSID and WEP key into the NetworkManager GUI and have it work. |
