Welcome to LQ!

You really shouldn't need any mac addresses to configure your wireless. Can you fill us in on some details about what distro you're using and how you're trying to configure your wireless card?

rokalotjeff 10-12-2010 07:11 PM

i dont know what a distro is, i loaded ubuntu 10.10 netbook final

thank you! my wireless shows the 2wire im supposed to connect to wirelessly but when i try, it keeps asking me for my wep key. i put it in and a minute later it asks again this keeps going till i cancel it. so i was trying to manually configure it and it asked for that info. my wireless modem dosent have dhcp (i think thats what it,s called) it has pppoe connections. under wireless settings in the os, it dosent have a option for pppoe. so im stuck! and i need the wireless for school. im not sure what you mean by distro, but i have ubuntu 10.10 netbook i386 final. any help would be deeply appreciated.

You're using a horribly insecure encryption method. You really shouldn't be using WEP if you are concerned about security. While it isn't likely that this is a driver problem, it would be helpful to know what wireless hardware you've got. If you can open a console and run lspci, there should be an entry labeled "Network Controller" and that will hopefully have the wireless card info, particularly the chipset.

Yes, Ubuntu is a linux distro (like Debian, Slackware, Fedora, etc.....) so that helps.

I don't think we need your modem settings at this point, so don't worry about it.

Are you using network manager to try and configure the wireless card or are you using something else?

Are you sure you're looking at your wireless connection here? PPPOE doesn't make sense for wireless connection.

A few things:

- The lshw output is useless since you didn't drill down to the wireless card. All that is showing is the top level hardware controllers

-lspci isn't helping. What it is showing is this:

Code:

01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB PRO/100 VE (MOB) Ethernet Controller (rev 83)
which I believe is your wired connection.

Your wireless scan:

Code:

rokalotjeff@rokalotjeff-lap:~$ sudo iwlist eth1 scan

eth1      Scan completed :

If this is your access point, the ESSID is blank, and really shouldn't be. Are you hiding the ESSID on the access point or have you never entered it? Either way, having an ESSID is going to be pretty useful. If you look at the iwconfig eth1 output, I suspect that your card isn't associated with the access point. That would explain the failure of the dhclient eth1 command.

So lets start from the beginning here. what is the ESSID of your access point, and what does the output of iwconfig eth1 look like? By the way, you can just post the output in your post, no need to make an attachment. Just copy/paste what you want to post and then surround it with the CODE or QUOTE tags.

Your ISP shouldn't know what an ESSID is. The ESSID is the name given to a wireless access point or wireless router. You'll also see SID or SSID thrown around, they mean exactly the same thing. When you do a scan for wireless access points, the names for each of them will show up in the ESSID line of the output. And speaking of output, that iwconfig output you posted looks odd. Are you anywhere near the access point? It looks like you have no real signal at all.

What MAC address are you talking about? The one for the wireless card or the one for the access point? And where did you put it? And how did you put it in? Since none of us can see what you're doing, you have to give us details about what you've done.

If you did a full, standard install, that shouldn't be an issue. There really isn't a way for the old Windows install to mess with the new Linux install. Now that said, if you didn't do a full, standard install, or if the slowness isn't going away, a re-install might not be a bad idea.

my essid is 2wire115, i put the mac add from my wireless card, it,s the bssid that my isp dident know, they said it was the same as my essid, which is wrong, because it has to be entered in number form. im going to wipe my hard drive and reinstall, i,ll keep you updated. thank you for helping me, im new at this, my desktop has 10.04 and it runs great. i,ve tryed 9.10, 10.04, 10.04.1, on my laptop and none of them worked wirelessly. i loaded windows, just to check, and got right on the internet. but windows is way to slow, i,de realy like ubuntu to work. i,ll let you know.

Well, at least your ESSID has a name. Based on your earlier post, I'm going to assume that WEP encryption is on. So try this (as root)

Code:

iwconfig eth1 essid 2WIRE115
iwconfig eth1 key YourWEPKeyHere

If you look at the iwconfig eth1 output at this point, you should see that the ESSID field now has the 2WIRE115 value and you should see that your device is associated with the access point. If that is true, then request an IP address:

Code:

ifup eth1
That should get you an IP address from the router and you should be good to go.

By the way, you should be able to enter the ESSID and WEP key into the NetworkManager GUI and have it work.
