An update:
That T60 stayed Win 7 only. In the interim I have eventually abandoned Windows and settled on MX linux and I'm very happy with it. None of the laptops or desktops I'm using now have a dual boot, but I do have a couple with Windows only if I should need it for some reason. I tried a VM for Windows within linux a year ago but could not make it work. I do have one laptop, a Thinkpad X61t (tablet) with Mint XFCE because MX would take a long time (5min at least) to boot whether from the install live usb or from an install to the ssd. It would seem some hardware just presents obstacles to some software.
