Installing Lubuntu on Sony Vaio laptop wifi issue
Hello again
From my last thread on attempting to install Mint on this laptop, I was led to antiX and that distro. Through some of the experts there (big thanks to dolphin!!) I was able to get it installed. But, I had some issues with the mouse pointer freezing that we could really not figure out. But I did use the knowledge gained from that install to get Lubuntu 15 installed! Which I could not earlier.. It seems to run fine, mouse pointer works as it should. So this is bringing up new questions, around the wifi card and connections I don't know how to configure it, I don't even know if the card is being seen by Linux. In Mint, it was pretty straightforward. I installed Mint on a old Dell laptop and it was real easy. I played around with the network manager and from what I find online it should see my wireless network but does not, leading me to think the card is not installed correctly here is my system Processor Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73GHz1 , 2MB L2 Cache) Front Side Bus Speed 533MHz Chipset Intel 915GM Integrated Wireless LAN Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (802.11b/g)3 LCD 14.1 WXGA display8 (1280x800) with XBRITE-ECO technology Hard Drive 80GB2 5400rpm Serial ATA Memory 1GB PC2-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512MBx2) (Expandable up to 2GB) Graphics Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 128MB Dynamically Shared RAM Video Memory Graphics Interface VGA out w/ Smart Display Sensor Optical Drive DVD+R Double Layer / DVDRW Drive4 DVD+R DL Write (4x MAX); DVD-R Write (8x MAX); DVD-RW Write (6x MAX) DVD+R Write (8x MAX); DVD+RW Write (8x MAX) CD-R Write (24x MAX); CD-RW Write (24x MAX) DVD-ROM Read (8x MAX); CD-ROM Read (24x MAX) Communication Integrated MOTION-EYE Camera with built-in microphone Modem Integrated V.90 Modem (RJ-11) Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet (RJ-45) Audio Windows sound system compatible with Built-in stereo speakers Audio Interface Microphone jack, Headphone jack Optional Port Replicator 3 USB 2.0 ports, Monitor (VGA) port, Printer port, DVI-D, DC in, RJ-45 Ethernet Memory Stick Media Slot Supports optional Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick DUO media5 with MagicGate functionality PC Card Slots One PCMCIA - Type II/Type I card slot with CardBus support Other Interfaces 4pin i.LINK6 connector(IEEE 13943), 3 USB 2.0 ports, port replicator connector, VGA out Pointing Device Electro-Static touch pad Any assistance would be appreciated |
Looking at my system info looks like my Ethernet card is installed so I am going to try to plug it into my network and see if it downloads anything.
When I installed Lubuntu, I was not online so there needs to be additional software added anyway I imagine |
The first thing to do after an install is an update...
|
hopefully I can connect through the Ethernet connection so I can LOL
will try in a little bit and report back thanks |
well this is really starting to kick my butt
I connected with my Ethernet and it downloaded a bunch of updates. I still cannot get the wireless card to connect. I dont even know how to tell if its installed correctly or has the proper drivers Have looked at some You Tube videos but they just dont show what I have or they talk about other stuff I dont see or have I could really use some help thanks |
Personally, twas I you, I'd download Lubuntu 14.04 the LTS version. Buntu 15 is only good for 9 months then you have to do this again. Version 16.04, the next LTS (long term support) comes in late April but you will not have to bail from 14.04 even then.
The latest versions of Buntu are more focused on newer hardware and that can cause issues with older hardware. I've been running 14.04 (alongside MX) for a long time and it's steady and stable. I assume the mouse issues in MX were from a touchpad? I never use them as I prefer a wireless mouse myself... http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/re...14.04/release/ |
lubuntu uses
Code:
lspci -knn Quote:
|
Also uses
Code:
sudo ifconfig -a |

Hi Brian...
I use Lubuntu 14.04 LTS myself, it's a good distribution. :) If you would, please open a terminal and post the entire output of... Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2 Regards... |

actually I am running Mint on a old Dell that I installed just a few days ago and its really nice, very quick and easy to configure everything which is what I am posting from now...
It is a lesser machine than this Vaio but for some reason I have had all kinds of trouble installing anything on the Vaio Finally getting someplace but stuck at the wireless issue really frustrating but I will get it resolved I am not giving up!! |
this is what I get when I run that command
brian@brian-VGN-FJ170:~$ sudo ifconfig -a [sudo] password for brian: enp6s8 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:01:4a:ca:4c:4f inet addr:10.0.0.24 Bcast:10.0.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::201:4aff:feca:4c4f/64 Scope:Link inet6 addr: 2601:403:1:f438:8012:401f:37c:a039/64 Scope:Global inet6 addr: 2601:403:1:f438:201:4aff:feca:4c4f/64 Scope:Global UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:40412 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:30570 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:28016109 (28.0 MB) TX bytes:3575503 (3.5 MB) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:18433 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:18433 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1656507 (1.6 MB) TX bytes:1656507 (1.6 MB) brian@brian-VGN-FJ170:~$ |
Hi Brian...
At first glance, it doesn't appear that the driver and/or firmware for your adapter is loading at boot but I'm not sure. If you would, could I also get the outputs for... Code:
lsmod Code:
dmesg | grep -i wlan Code:
dmesg | grep -i wireless Code:
dmesg Please retrieve the dmesg report right after the system boots up. Regards... |
