Installing Lubuntu on Sony Vaio laptop wifi issue
Hello again
From my last thread on attempting to install Mint on this laptop, I was led to antiX and that distro. Through some of the experts there (big thanks to dolphin!!) I was able to get it installed. But, I had some issues with the mouse pointer freezing that we could really not figure out. But I did use the knowledge gained from that install to get Lubuntu 15 installed! Which I could not earlier.. It seems to run fine, mouse pointer works as it should. So this is bringing up new questions, around the wifi card and connections I don't know how to configure it, I don't even know if the card is being seen by Linux. In Mint, it was pretty straightforward. I installed Mint on a old Dell laptop and it was real easy. I played around with the network manager and from what I find online it should see my wireless network but does not, leading me to think the card is not installed correctly here is my system Processor Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73GHz1 , 2MB L2 Cache) Front Side Bus Speed 533MHz Chipset Intel 915GM Integrated Wireless LAN Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (802.11b/g)3 LCD 14.1 WXGA display8 (1280x800) with XBRITE-ECO technology Hard Drive 80GB2 5400rpm Serial ATA Memory 1GB PC2-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512MBx2) (Expandable up to 2GB) Graphics Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 128MB Dynamically Shared RAM Video Memory Graphics Interface VGA out w/ Smart Display Sensor Optical Drive DVD+R Double Layer / DVDRW Drive4 DVD+R DL Write (4x MAX); DVD-R Write (8x MAX); DVD-RW Write (6x MAX) DVD+R Write (8x MAX); DVD+RW Write (8x MAX) CD-R Write (24x MAX); CD-RW Write (24x MAX) DVD-ROM Read (8x MAX); CD-ROM Read (24x MAX) Communication Integrated MOTION-EYE Camera with built-in microphone Modem Integrated V.90 Modem (RJ-11) Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet (RJ-45) Audio Windows sound system compatible with Built-in stereo speakers Audio Interface Microphone jack, Headphone jack Optional Port Replicator 3 USB 2.0 ports, Monitor (VGA) port, Printer port, DVI-D, DC in, RJ-45 Ethernet Memory Stick Media Slot Supports optional Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick DUO media5 with MagicGate functionality PC Card Slots One PCMCIA - Type II/Type I card slot with CardBus support Other Interfaces 4pin i.LINK6 connector(IEEE 13943), 3 USB 2.0 ports, port replicator connector, VGA out Pointing Device Electro-Static touch pad Any assistance would be appreciated |
Looking at my system info looks like my Ethernet card is installed so I am going to try to plug it into my network and see if it downloads anything.
When I installed Lubuntu, I was not online so there needs to be additional software added anyway I imagine |
The first thing to do after an install is an update...
|
hopefully I can connect through the Ethernet connection so I can LOL
will try in a little bit and report back thanks |
well this is really starting to kick my butt
I connected with my Ethernet and it downloaded a bunch of updates. I still cannot get the wireless card to connect. I dont even know how to tell if its installed correctly or has the proper drivers Have looked at some You Tube videos but they just dont show what I have or they talk about other stuff I dont see or have I could really use some help thanks |
Personally, twas I you, I'd download Lubuntu 14.04 the LTS version. Buntu 15 is only good for 9 months then you have to do this again. Version 16.04, the next LTS (long term support) comes in late April but you will not have to bail from 14.04 even then.
The latest versions of Buntu are more focused on newer hardware and that can cause issues with older hardware. I've been running 14.04 (alongside MX) for a long time and it's steady and stable. I assume the mouse issues in MX were from a touchpad? I never use them as I prefer a wireless mouse myself... http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/re...14.04/release/ |
lubuntu uses
Code:
lspci -knn Quote:
|
Also uses
Code:
sudo ifconfig -a |

Hi Brian...
I use Lubuntu 14.04 LTS myself, it's a good distribution. :) If you would, please open a terminal and post the entire output of... Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2 Regards... |

thank you very much for your help
|
actually I am running Mint on a old Dell that I installed just a few days ago and its really nice, very quick and easy to configure everything which is what I am posting from now...
It is a lesser machine than this Vaio but for some reason I have had all kinds of trouble installing anything on the Vaio Finally getting someplace but stuck at the wireless issue really frustrating but I will get it resolved I am not giving up!! |
this is what I get when I run that command
brian@brian-VGN-FJ170:~$ sudo ifconfig -a [sudo] password for brian: enp6s8 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:01:4a:ca:4c:4f inet addr:10.0.0.24 Bcast:10.0.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::201:4aff:feca:4c4f/64 Scope:Link inet6 addr: 2601:403:1:f438:8012:401f:37c:a039/64 Scope:Global inet6 addr: 2601:403:1:f438:201:4aff:feca:4c4f/64 Scope:Global UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:40412 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:30570 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:28016109 (28.0 MB) TX bytes:3575503 (3.5 MB) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:18433 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:18433 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1656507 (1.6 MB) TX bytes:1656507 (1.6 MB) brian@brian-VGN-FJ170:~$ |
Hi Brian...
At first glance, it doesn't appear that the driver and/or firmware for your adapter is loading at boot but I'm not sure. If you would, could I also get the outputs for... Code:
lsmod Code:
dmesg | grep -i wlan Code:
dmesg | grep -i wireless Code:
dmesg Please retrieve the dmesg report right after the system boots up. Regards... |
Brian A,
Disconnect the ethernet cable and operate the wifi switch on and off a few times to check that the wifi is actually switched ON. Is the wifi tell-tale light on or blinking? What is the output from Terminal for the following? Code:
rfkill list all |

Brian A,
Thanks for that. Outputs from these please: Code:
rfkill list all |
brian@brian-VGN-FJ170:~$ rfkill list all
brian@brian-VGN-FJ170:~$ brian@brian-VGN-FJ170:~$ iwconfig enp6s8 no wireless extensions. lo no wireless extensions. |
Brian A,
I have a horrible feeling that this will get messy with modules and the like. Reconnect the ethernet cable and let's just confirm that your software is up to date. Type: Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware When you have done that, let us have these outputs please: Code:
ifconfig |
it says latest firmware is already installed
I did find an Intel linux driver for the card, I put it on a cd and tried to install it but I cant figure out how, if thats the problem. When I try it says something like cd not recognised I made this cd with windows if that matters thanks if this is going to get really complicated maybe its just best I forget about it |
Brian A,
Yes it will get complicated unfortunately. This link will give you an idea of how messy it can get: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2079211 It IS possible to make the Intel 2200BG wifi work in Mint/Ubuntu etc but maybe it is better left alone for the time being? |

I did get Mint on my other old Dell and its working great. I will just forget about this Sony for now thanks for all you help |
Brian A,
No problem. PS Maybe rokytnji will be able to assist you. |

If this is just a firmware issue, then the instructions listed in post #6 don't seem too difficult. ;) Regards... |

Yes I did try it Its not hard to do but the results were the same still not working ahhh welll |
well...
progress has been made. I remembered I have a old wireless pcmcia card. Slapped it in and it found the network!! Alright!!! But wait...I enter my password, not getting in! Tried rebooting, etc etc Dang it!!! So I tried connecting to the wifi hotspot on my phone, its working! I dont understand why its not hooking up to comcast, I may try the card in a different laptop. Maybe the card and comcast dont want to play together? It does see the wireless network now, so thats a start.... |

Netgear 32 bit 802.11b 2.4ghz Model MA521
I am going to contact Comcast to see if its supported |
after pulling the teeth of the support person I found out that this card is supposed to be able to connect to Comcast.
so on I go.... |
Hi...
Just as an idea, perhaps you can post this issue (the internal Intel chip) in Ubuntu's forum and see if Chili555 can lend a hand with this. :) Regards... |

A good suggestion. |

Your wireless card is supported well in Ubuntu 14.04. In fact, in one of your diagnostic outputs, the driver ipw2200 is even loaded. In your most recent, it is not:

Code:
sudo modprobe ipw2200 |

Reboot and let us have your report. |
should I use method 1 or method 2 in the guide link?
I really dont have any experience with this, so whatever the easiest way would be best for me method one say to manually edit the grub config file but the link it sends me to doesnt really show how its done, its just a page telling me about grub2 |
I suggest that you open a terminal and do:
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash irqpoll" Now do: Code:
sudo update-grub Code:
sudo modprobe ipw2200 |
ok thanks!
I am on my way to a birthday party so I will get back to this later, or in the morning when I have a few minutes to concentrate on it I really appreciate your help!! |
Hi chili555...
Thank you for coming over to help, your knowledge and abilities with getting wireless adapters to work precedes you. :D Regards... |
I was talkiing about my Linux adventures on these 2 laptops at the party and had to come home and try chili555's suggestion
It works it works!!!! I am coming to you LIVE on my Vaio's wireless connection!! Thank you all for all your help and patience in sovling this for me!!! I do have other Linux questions but they have more to do with the GUI and some of the operations and they will come if I cant figure them out Again, thanks to everyone and expecially chili555 !!! it gives me great pleasure to mark this thread SOLVED!!!! |
