Hi Everybody,

I installed Debian V3.0r1 (kernel 2.4.18-bf24) on my Fujitsu Lifebook E342, but it doesn't recognize the soundcard.

Previous W98 installation registered the following parameters for the soundcard:

ESS ES1879 audio chip
DMA 01,05
IRQ 5
I/O 0x220-0x22f, 0x388-0x38b, 0x330-0x331

The Fujitsu manual states that the soundcard is SoundBlaster Pro-compatible 16-bit stereo.

I installed 'sndconfig' and ran it with the following parameters:

Card type: Sound Blaster Pro
I/O Port: 0x220
IRQ: 5
DMA: 1

It returns the following error msg:

/lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: init_module: No such device

I then tried 'sndconfig' again with:

Card type: Sound Blaster 16
I/O Port: 0x220
IRQ: 5
DMA1: 1
DMA2: 5
MPU I/O: 0x330

And exactly the same error msg is returned.

I'm stuck. I searched the web but couldn't find anything to shed light on this problem.

Has anybody ran across this and found a solution ?

Hi Everybody,

I managed to get the soundcard working this morning:

1. Changed the BIOS setting for sound: Advanced -> Multimedia Device Configuration -> Sound

From: Auto
To: Enabled

accepting all default parameters:

Base I/O address: 220-22F
FM I/O address: 388-38B
MPU I/O address: 330-331
Interrupt: 5
DMA channel: DMA 1
DMA channel: DMA 5

2. Run 'sndconfig', choosing:

Card type: Sound Blaster 16
I/O Port: 0x220
IRQ: 5
DMA 1: 1
DMA 2: 5
MPU I/O: 0x330

3. Tested that it was loaded correctly:

depmod -a
modprobe sb

The card is recognized now. I haven't fully tested it. If I have any problems I will post them here for future reference.

To load the drivers at boot time, I guess I need to insert into /etc/module:

sb
